Recently, I had the pleasure of attending the Asia Pacific conference of the International Baccalaureate in Melbourne exploring teaching and learning in the 21st century. The conference themes covered topics of much importance today in our globalised world - citizenship, creativity, connectivity and compassion with an exceptional group of presenters from around the world including Mr Wade Davis, National Geographic explorer–in-residence .....

Victor Finkel (OW2004), who recently won the World Debating championships in Botswana, has demonstrated an extraordinary range of diverse achievements since leaving school, crowned by his triumph earlier this year in the hot-house of world university debating. We talk a lot about diversity at Wesley, about igniting passion, and Victor has exemplified this in his post-school approach to life generally.

Rowing is indisputably a part of the fabric of schools with long traditions of sporting prowess, and the rowing fraternities within such schools are frequently outspoken, and driven by a strong belief in what this particular activity contributes to building loyalty, teamwork, personal courage and endurance. And with good reason, too, because it does all these things. But in mysterious ways, its influence goes even deeper than this. The words "N'oublions jamais l'Australie" appear in the classrooms of the school in Villers-Bretonneux, in northern France, rebuilt after the war with money raised by donations from Victorians following WWII. The school plaque carries the following words: This school building is the gift of the schoolchildren of Victoria, Australia , to the children Villers-Bretonneux as a proof of their love and good-will towards France....
