Last quarter, our office received 22 invention disclosures, a 57% rise over the same period last year. We hope this is a trend as invention disclosure is a critical first step towards exploring commercial applications of academic research. Learn more.

Recognition for Inventors: US Patent Awards
Brown has been awarded 37 patents in the past 18 months for faculty inventions. We will mail these inventors, and future ones, special certificates that we hope they will proudly post in their labs, and digital badges for their social media profiles.

Full Board/Expedited Amendments and Exempt Modifications
Use the new Revision Request Form to make changes to any Exempt, Expedited, or Full Board study. This new form replaces the Amendment and Exempt Modification forms.

NIH Survey to Identify Impacts of COVID-19 on Research 
This month, NIH sent a survey to a sample group of NIH-funded researchers to understand how COVID-19 has impacted them. If you received this survey, we encourage you to fill it out before it closes at the end of October.

Per NASA Grant Notice 20-02, requests will be considered from award recipients stating that they have experienced a loss of operational capacity due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

DOE Office of Science on Research Delays Caused by COVID-19                            Department of Energy's Office of Science says it "is committed to maximum flexibility in administering awards, recognizing potential delays in research caused by" COVID-19. See the statement here, visit DOE Responding to COVID site here.

NSF Federal Updates

BIO-wide Virtual Office Hours to support Migration to Research.gov 
The Directorate for Biological Sciences (BIO) will implement a requirement for submission of full proposals via Research.gov (or Grants.gov) for BIO solicitations that accept proposal submission at any time.

Updates to the Research Performance Progress Report (RPPR)
NSF will add the following three questions to the "Impact" and "Changes/Problems" tabs: What was the impact on teaching and educational experiences? What percentage of the award’s budget was spent in a foreign country? Has there been a change in primary performance site location from that originally proposed?

Broadening Participation in STEM Webinar                                                                NSF's Broadening Participation in STEM through Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Webinar, recorded on September 30, is now available in video and PDF formats.

NSF proposals via Research.gov using TeX/LaTeX files                                        Additional automated compliance checking in Research.gov for project descriptions as of  October 5. Files prepared using TeX/LaTeX will generate warnings when submitted to Research.gov because of the font size.

Future Topics for NSF Convergence Accelerator and Conference Proposals
The purpose of this RFI and call for future topics conference proposals is to seek input on potential NSF Convergence Accelerator tracks for FY 2022.

Temporary Changes to NIH Policies Due to COVID-19 Pandemic
For those planning an upcoming grant applications, note that applicants should not include contingency plans related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Read more. And applicants can provide a one-page summary of additional preliminary data up to 30 days before the review meeting. Read more.

Trainee Diversity Report to be Submitted Electronically
A requirement for institutions receiving institutional research training, career development and research education awards is to submit the Trainee Diversity Report with Research Performance Progress Reports (RPPRs), Interim Final RPPRs, and Final RPPRs will use a new option that will be provided in the xTrain and RPPR modules in early FY 2021.

The Richard B. Salomon Faculty Research Awards support excellence in scholarly work, funding projects up to $15,000. Proposals (via UFunds) are due by 5pm on November 10. See here for complete guidelines and instructions.
