Welcome to the February 2012 edition of the Business Insider.

We’ve had a few questions recently about claiming deductions for business entertainment and gift- giving expenses, so we have some information from Inland Revenue to help clarify what deductions can be claimed.

For those in the food and beverage industry, we’ve got details about two government initiatives. First, the Food Innovation Network – a food innovation support system – and second, the Food and Beverage (F&B) Information Project – a comprehensive overview of New Zealand’s top F&B industries.

For employers, we have an interesting case study on a recent trial testing how the 90-Day Trial Period rules can be applied. If you use trial periods when employing staff, make sure you read this.

Finally, we are delighted to announce that our Business Plan Competition will be going ahead again later this year. It doesn’t matter whether you are at the business idea stage or have been in business for a few years, start thinking about your business plan and you could be in to win some fantastic prizes!
