Jingle Bell Run/Walk with Northside Physical Therapy

Therapeutic Associates Northside Physical Therapy tied jingle bells to our shoelaces on Saturday December 5, 2015 to raise funds for the Jingle Bell Run/Walk, benefiting the Arthritis Foundation.  More than 1600 people participated in this festive event and helped to raise over $75,000 for arthritis research.  Check out our Facebook page for pictures from the event!

Avoid Injury While Raking Leaves and Shoveling Snow

Raking and snow shoveling provide an excellent aerobic workout. You should always check with your doctor before starting new aerobic activities that place high stress on your heart. If you have a medical condition or do not exercise regularly, you should find someone to assist you with raking and snow removal.


General Safety Tips:

Warmup your muscles and cardiovascular system before activity by performing exercises and/or a short walk.

Use proper equipment according to your height. You should be able to have your hands 18-24” apart and the handle should be about chin height. A rake or shovel with too short of a handle will require excessive forward bending and too long of a handle will decrease your leverage.

Pace yourself by taking regular rest breaks and replenish fluids to avoid dehydration.

Dress appropriately in layers to stay warm. This gives you the ability to remove layers as you warm-up. Use gloves to keeps hands warm and prevent blisters.


Tips for Raking Leaves:

  • Keep rake handle close to body to promote upright posture through the back and neck.
  • Place one foot in front of the other with slight bend at knees, so you are able to shift weight back and forth between feet as you rake.
  • Minimize trunk twisting by using pulling motion from the shoulders and weight shifting at the legs.
  • Switch sides with your lead foot & hand to equalize stresses to each side of the body.
  • Avoid overfilling bags to limit the load on your back and arms as you carry bags.


Tips for Snow Shoveling:

  • Try a combination of pushing the snow and lifting to alter the loads on your body.
  • Use lift strategies that involve bending the knees and keeping the load close to the body.
  • Scoop small amounts of snow to limit load on your back while lifting.
  • Avoid throwing snow over the shoulder or to the side to limit trunk twisting. Use your feet to pivot and keep shoulders in alignment over your hips.

Physical therapists can be legally seen directly without a referral under what is known as ‘direct access’. That means that as a consumer of healthcare, you can seek medical treatment for your musculoskeletal issues directly from the physical therapist of your choosing. This places physical therapy as a first line provider for your musculoskeletal health.


What does Direct Access mean for you?

  • Immediate evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment from your physical therapist for your musculoskeletal injuries without the delay of visiting another healthcare professional
  • Immediate consultation with your physical therapist to determine if therapy is needed or if further examination by another healthcare practitioner is warranted
  • Strong potential for decreased healing time for your injury due to receiving treatment without delay
  • Freedom to choose a physical therapist as you would an MD, DO, chiropractor, dentist, or other healthcare professional
  • Continuity of care as you return to your physical therapist for all of your musculoskeletal needs, including relief from injury as well as prevention and overall wellness

Some insurance companies require referral in order to pay for your treatment. As a convenience to you, all Therapeutic Associates locations will gladly verify your insurance benefits prior to your first visit.
