Report from MWMG Chair, Cr. Heinz Kreutz

Welcome to the September edition of MetroWaste News. MWMG has had an exciting month with the commencement of an organics procurement process for the South East of Melbourne. Following on from the Northern and Western procurement, this is the next step towards the implementation of an organics plan for metropolitan Melbourne. The tender was advertised on Saturday 25 August and the resulting contract will provide organics processing facilities for eight south eastern councils.

On the Federal front, the Fary Report into asbestos management has been released and has generated some discussion in the media. Domestic asbestos is a difficult issue for local government. In our role, MWMG has been working to develop a central Victorian Government web portal that will assist local government deal with enquiries from residents regarding domestic asbestos. Over the past few months we have been working closely with EPA and WorkSafe to iron out some last minute hurdles and I am happy to announce that we hope to commence work on this important project soon.

Melbourne has launched into spring spectacularly with some beautiful weather reminding us it’s time to spring clean. Buy Nothing New Month is just around the corner making it a perfect time to donate your unused (but still in good condition) items to your local charity and to support them by checking out other donated treasures.

We’ve also had a bit of a spring clean of our website with a tidied up ‘Find out More’ page and the addition of a ‘Things that don’t go in the bin’ page. The ‘Find out More’ page now provides useful links to information and publications on being waste wise, information in other languages and information on responsible bodies and initiatives. ‘Things that don’t go in the bin’ covers what items don’t go in the kerbside rubbish bin and what to do with them - reuse, recycle and/or dispose.
