Local Kids Join The War On WasteStudents from West Ryde Public School have joined the war on waste, writing to a local restaurant providing them with suggestions about how they can reduce the build-up of rubbish from the restaurant ending up in surrounding streets. The Year 3 students have been learning to write persuasive texts along with developing a strong awareness of how rubbish and single-use plastics impacts on the environment and wildlife. As part of their studies, the students started a campaign in which they wrote to the McDonald’s restaurant seeking
its assistance in minimising the amount of rubbish that is generated by the business. “The efforts of these students should be commended as they have taken it upon themselves to try and reduce the amount of rubbish in the local area but ultimately it is the responsibility of the community to dispose of their rubbish properly”, City of Ryde Mayor, Clr Jerome Laxale, said.

Wondering How You Can Manage Your Food Waste At Home?Did you know that the average Australian household throws an estimated $3,800 worth of food waste per year? What a waste! Simple actions can help you reduce this such as looking in your pantry or fridge before you shop, writing a weekly menu, creating a shopping list and turning your food scraps into organic fertiliser for the garden. To help you get started, Council is offering residents free workshops and composting bins and worms farms at subsided rates. City to Ryde residents can purchase a compost bin
($64) or worm farm ($32.50) by contacting customer service on 9952 822. Upcoming composting events include: - Composting and Worm Farming Master Class: on Saturday 3 November [Book Now]
- Kitchen Gardening Workshop: Saturday 24 November [Book Now]
Residents that attend one of the above workshops also receive an additional 50-per cent discount voucher to go towards the purchase of their worm farm or compost bin.
National Tree Day:
Before And AfterEach year the City of Ryde’s National Tree Day event gains more volunteers. National Tree Day 2018 at Laurel Park was another very successful year for planting and expanding Ryde’s bushland. Fast forward one year on from National Tree Day 2017 at Field of Mars Reserve, you can see the true success of the hardworking volunteers. The plantings have now flourished to help expand the wildlife corridor along Buffalo Creek, while also increasing biodiversity within Field of Mars Reserve. See the National Tree Day 2017 before and after photos at Field of Mars Reserve below - the results speak for themselves!

Sustainability News And ViewsParramatta River MasterplanThe Parramatta River Catchment Group, which City of Ryde is a member of, has been working hard over the past few years to develop a plan for the river. We have just released Ten Steps to a Living River that forms the basis of the Parramatta River Masterplan, which will be launched in October 2018 at the International River Symposium. The Masterplan sets out our agreed actions to make the Parramatta River swimmable again, which has
been designed based on extensive scientific research and community consultation. Find out more about our Ten Steps to a Living River by downloading our brochure or watching our new video!
