 | | Welcome back to school everyone! MORE HEALTH
instructors are eager to begin teaching health and safety lessons in classrooms across the Tampa Bay area. Our focus continues to be providing children, teens and adults with the information needed to make healthy, safe decisions on a daily basis. Whether educating first graders about proper oral hygiene, or stressing the dangers of distracted driving to teenagers...MORE HEALTH brings education to life and makes a difference in the health of our communities. |
Over the summer MORE HEALTH was honored to be included in the Community Foundation of Tampa Bay’s Big Idea Grant. The grant serves to greatly impact local communities in need of food, housing and health. Partnering with Tampa Bay Harvest, MORE HEALTH
will assist residents in creating community gardens and accessing healthy food sources. One, in particular, will be a tilapia aquapond garden, in which plants will feed the fish and the fish will fertilize the garden. Subsequently, the fish and produce will be consumed by residents. The cycle continues with the breeding of additional tilapia. By providing community members with the education to maintain these gardens, we believe the cost of gardening will decrease and community health will thrive.
Welcome new board members:
 | • Rick Kouwe - Retired Businessman - Mr. Kouwe will be serving as Finance Committee Chair.
• Mike Gorsage - Tampa General Hospital Senior Vice President Strategic Services and Business Development
• Dr. Peter Chang - Tampa General Hospital Chief Medical Informatics Officer |
Returning board members Cindy Rose and Donna Walsh will serve as Vice President and Secretary respectively. We thank all of our board members for passionately leading MORE HEALTH into what we know will be another wonderful school year!

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) uses the MyPlate illustration to help us understand the food groups that comprise a healthy diet. To create a healthy plate, the USDA recommends eating foods from 5 groups: fruits, vegetables, grains, protein, and dairy. Because fruits and vegetables contain so many essential nutrients, consuming them may actually reduce the risk of disease. In fact, the MyPlate guidelines recommend eating more fruits and vegetables than any other food group!

Dr. Randy Feldman has been a MORE HEALTH supporter since our inception as a three-year Junior League of Tampa project, created in response to a need expressed by classroom teachers to have exciting health education in the schools. As an orthodontist since 1982, he assisted Nancy Crane and Marsha Martin (both of the Junior League) in securing much-needed dental education materials such as toothbrushes, floss and paste for the project. Dr. Feldman even helped to write our original Dental 1 and Dental 2 lessons.

Bones give the body structure, protect internal organs, work in conjunction with muscles in movement, and store calcium and other minerals for use in the body. When considering a healthy lifestyle, sustaining bone health and preventing osteoporosis should be at the top of the list!

Effective January 1, 2015, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles says that children aged 4 and 5 years must use a child safety seat or booster seat when in a motor vehicle. It will no longer be legal to simply buckle them in with a seat belt. Seat belts do not fit children properly until they are at least 4 feet 9 inches tall, 80 pounds and between the ages of 8 and 12 according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Parents, consider this before utilizing seat belts only:- Is your child at least 4 feet 9 inches tall?
- Does he / she weigh at least 80 pounds?
- Can your child sit all the way back in the seat and bend his/her knees at the edge of the seat?
- Does the shoulder belt lay across the chest, NOT the neck?
- Does the lap belt lay across the upper thighs, NOT the stomach?
