In Touch With Your Dawson County Government

July 2017

All Dawson County offices will be closed on
Tuesday, July 4, 2017
in observance of Independence Day.

County Manager David Headley

Two hundred and forty-one years ago this week, marks a rare turning point in human history - the founding of a nation on the principle of human freedom. In July of 1776, at the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia, 56 men pledged “their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor” to that ideal.

“We hold these truths to be self-evident,” they wrote: “that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”

For more than two centuries, our nation has continued to be defined by these fundamental values and principles. They are the essence of America.  Just as there were sacrifices made at the time our founding fathers declared independence from Great Britain, our military today pays the ultimate sacrifice so that the people of this great nation may continue to enjoy the freedoms that were intend to be.

The extraordinary courage they display has become the culture that we breed. However, courage is not always laid down on the battle fields. It’s exhibited in the challenges that we all face in our daily lives as we uphold these embedded values.

It is my prayer for all of you this week that July 4th be a day of remembrance, acknowledging those who have sacrificed and fought for the ideals of the Declaration of Independence….Grant me the ability that I remain mindful of all those who have sacrificed for my freedom, following the example of your son, Jesus Christ.
