International Student Data

Update: July data release - disaggregation of the 'national' category.

At the end of 2013, Australian Education International (AEI) added a new ‘national’ category to the data set, to capture courses/providers that operate across multiple States. The data on enrolments and commencements at national providers was not separated by State or Territory. A large number of these 'national' enrolments were estimated to be located at Victorian campuses of national providers, thus, if included in total Australia enrolments, the impact of the national category would be to underestimate Victoria’s share of enrolments. To mitigate this, a decision was taken to exclude the national category from market share calculations.

From the July 2014 Market Information Package (MIP) data release, the ‘national’ category (which contained some 40, 000 enrolments) is disaggregated across states. That is, enrolments that were previously counted as ‘national’ are now correctly attributed to a physical location. For the full year 2013, this has resulted in an additional 18,500 enrolments for Victoria. These additional enrolments do not represent a material increase; rather, it is a more accurate representation of Victoria’s share of the Australian market than was possible when the national category was not disaggregated.

Key figures (full year and year to date) are available here.
