Pramanik Containers and the Bottleneck Challenge (A)

In 2010, a recent business graduate tries to resolve a constant bottleneck in the printing department of the family business. The two-part case discusses the issues of identifying the need for relevant information and then discusses the staff’s resistance to change and how these objections were handled and overcome. This pair of cases seeks to identify the pressures faced by small businesses, along with the task of managing the various stakeholders, including the father-owner and the personnel on the factory shop floor.

Learning Objective:

This case series can be used as an introduction to information technology in a family-managed business/entrepreneurial environment. The objective here was to help focus the participant’s minds to the question of what information is needed for solving a simple problem and how the flow of information can help solve a process bottleneck. In particular, enabling a system for this flow of information need not come at a very high cost. A simple four-person scenario is taken to help participants focus on the key issues, and the learning can be transferred for use in any environment. The case can also be used in organizational behaviour for illustrating managing change in entrepreneurial firms or in operations management for identifying bottlenecks in manufacturing organizations.
