Barnard College Construction Update - Dec. 22, 2015

Dear Neighbor,

As we near the end of the year, all of us at Barnard wish you a happy holiday season filled with warmth and joy.  While the students are away, our construction team will be hard at work.  Here is what to expect during the next two weeks.

Renovation of Barnard Hall

The renovation of the LeFrak Gym in Barnard Hall that began last summer is nearing completion and the space will reopen as the new LeFrak Center on Tuesday, Jan. 19. This renovation included transforming the gym into a two-story space that will house the people, programs, and activities moving out of Lehman Hall. You may see some activity during the next two weeks as our team moves the library and faculty out of Lehman Hall and into their new offices.

We expect the sidewalk shed along Claremont that has been in place during this construction to be removed this week. There will still be some activity along this portion of Claremont over the next few days as our construction team breaks down the Barnard Hall site.

Two Week Look Ahead - Dec. 22 – Jan. 5

  • The Barnard entrances on Claremont Avenue and Broadway at W. 119th Street will remain open as usual, and will continue to be the access points for walking through the College.
  • No construction activities will occur on Friday, Dec. 25 and Friday, Jan. 1.
  • We do not expect any lane closures on Claremont during these two weeks.
  • The portion of the infrastructure running through Lehman Hall that supports the College's telecommunication and building needs will be relocated to the lawn beginning this week.
  • The entrance door at 40 Claremont that in the past has provided swipe access to Barnard’s underground tunnels will permanently close on Monday, Dec. 28.
  • Some of the materials that will be used to build the infrastructure along Claremont will be delivered to the north side of Lehman Hall early the week of Dec. 28 (most likely Tuesday, Dec. 29). You may notice some additional noise during this delivery.
  • Construction of the covered walkway that Barnard students, faculty and staff will use to move between the north and south sides of campus during construction will begin on Monday, Dec. 28. The lawn and sidewalk from the south end of Barnard Hall to Altschul Hall will be closed for several weeks.  Visitors will need to use Broadway to move between the north and south sides of campus.
