A Full Day of Fun at CPC's Picnic for
Families with Special Needs On Sunday, August 29th, over 300 people including participants, families, staff and volunteers of CPC Queens Special Needs Program gathered for a picnic to celebrate the end of summer at Queens Botanical Garden. Participants and their parents came together to enjoy the beautiful garden, appreciate a special piano performance by mother-son pianist duo Michelle Chen Kuo and Christopher Kuo, and participate in family-friendly games and activities. It was the first in-person gathering event for the families since the lockdown in March 2020.

CPC Summer Rising Students Complete Mural at PS 130 Congratulations to PS 130 and Principal Fong on their School Mural Ribbon Cutting Ceremony! Principal Fong along with Resident Artist, Peach Tao, envisioned the mural "WE RISE" which encompassed the heart of Chinatown. The mural was unveiled August 11th and features a phoenix rising bringing life to the exterior wall of PS 130.

CPC Brooklyn Senior Services Hosts Tea Talks to Combat Pandemic Isolation and StressCPC Brooklyn Community Services held our first in-person Tea Talk, a group counseling session as part of the Geriatric Mental Health Initiative, in Sunset Park the weekend of August 14th. Through our Tea Talk sessions, seniors shared food and tea together and have the opportunity to discuss challenges they face throughout the pandemic, including mental health issues.
Residents of CPC Individual Residential Alternatives (IRA) at the Josephine M. Ho Community Residence for Special Needs recently enjoyed a day at the Unisphere in Flushing Meadows–Corona Park. Residents have been enjoying a series of outings throughout the summer.

CPC Calls for Ending 24-Hour Shifts at NY State Hearing on HomecareOn July 27th, CPC Chief Policy and Public Affairs Officer Carlyn Cowen presented testimony on behalf of the CPC Home Attendant Program, Inc. at the New York State Senate Joint Public Hearing on Nursing Home, Assisted Living, and Homecare Workforce. The testimony makes clear that New York State must end the 24-hour rule in homecare in favor of 12-hour split shifts and use its resources to meet the growing need for long-term care.
Our Community, Our Stories – CPC Fosters Power Through Empowerment: Justin LaBoy Our ninth community story features Justin LaBoy. Singer-songwriter, performer, actor (under the stage name Justice LaBrave), and freelance video editor, Justin LaBoy’s life has been indelibly shaped by a CPC program, CPC Project Reach. What started in 1971 as a small youth program in a storefront on Eldridge Street has become a unique and uniquely networked organization that supports Asian, Black, Latinx, and immigrant teenagers to become leaders in the movement for social justice.
CPC Promotes Excluded Workers Fund with State Senator Myrie On August 23rd, CPC worked with State Senator Zellnor Myrie and Center for Family Life to do outreach on the Excluded Workers Fund (EWF). CPC staff tabled at our CPC Brooklyn Community Center and provided information about eligibility and application procedures. Our Community, Our Stories – CPC Creates Opportunities for Success: Alvin Lin The "Our Community, Our Stories" campaign was launched to share the stories of different community members directly impacted by CPC. Our eighth community story features Alvin Lin. In 2008, Alvin Lin set out to find a new job. His aunt suggested he look into the Hospitality Careers Training Program at CPC Queens Community Center.
CPC SYEP Participants and Staff Join #StopAsianHate Day of Visibility Rally CPC participated in the #StopAsianHate Day of Visibility organized by the Mayor's Office and NYC Council Member Peter Koo. Our Queens Community Services staff and Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) participants attended the rally, shared resources with community members, and encouraged local businesses to put up posters by Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya. CPC Op-Ed in Gotham Gazette: It's Time to End Substandard Working Conditions in Home Care CPC President and CEO Wayne Ho's op-ed, published on Labor Day, September 6th, describes the systemic devaluation of care work and New York State's current home care system that pays chronically low wages and rations care.

Many of our services are available via virtual/remote access. We will be providing one-on-one career counseling, resume reviewing, searching and applying for jobs, and more.
