An important part of the Roman Forum was the rostra which was the platform beside the Curia from which orators spoke to the people of Rome. The speaking platform was so important that Julius Caesar had the rostra re-built in marble. It was from the new marble Rostra that Marc Antony delivered his funeral speech to Julius Caesar. Organisational change Flinders University has been embarking on a formal organisational change process, following consultation and feedback in 2016 and 2017 from across the University that showed a clear appetite for change. The implementation of the organisational change has two components – introduction of a six College model which commenced operations on 1 July 2017 and a realignment of professional support services to better support College operations. Now that Flinders has recruited and established a majority of leadership positions across the Colleges, the focus is on fully implementing the Professional Services Project model. Thank you to those staff who attended the PSP Forum on 11 September. PSP stages Stage 1 For Stage 1, after consultation on change proposals, change decisions were released in July for People and Culture, Financial and Procurement Services and Information and Digital Services. Stage 1a For Stage 1a, change proposals were released for Buildings and Property, Flinders Living, Integrity, Governance and Risk and the Library on 31 August 2017. Once consultation has been completed, change decisions are expected to be released by mid-October. Stage 2 Stage 2 change proposals are expected to be released in late September in the following areas: College Operations, Office of Communications and Engagement (OCE), Office of Graduate Research (OGR), Pro Vice-Chancellor (International) (PVC-I), Pro Vice-Chancellor Teaching and Learning (PVC T&L), Research Development and Support (RDS), Student Services and Student Recruitment. Once the change proposals are released, there will be formal consultation for two weeks. Change decisions are expected to be released to staff by approximately late October 2017. The University anticipates being able to commence implementation of the agreed structures immediately after the release of the decision information to staff – likely during the month of November. 2018 – bedding down change and continuous improvement By end 2017 and early 2018, our organisational structure will have settled. During this stage the new organisational structure will be further refined and there will be a focus on business improvements (including technological improvements and automation). As always, all organisational change will be managed in accordance with our obligations, with ongoing opportunities for staff to provide their feedback during the process. Dr. Kirstin Ross (Flinders Senior Lecturer in Environmental Health), Dr. Harriet Whiley (Flinders Lecturer Environmental Health) and Flinders PhD candidate Mira Beknazarova were in the news recently talking about how the parasitic worm Strongyloides stercoralis infect more people than malaria yet hardly anyone has heard of it. In particular, there is evidence to suggest that up to 60% of indigenous Australians are infected making it a very real problem faced by doctors, particularly in Northern parts of Australia. For more wormy details, read their Conversation article and the ABC news release.
