AUSTRALIA DAY: ALLBROOK AVERY + HAYLEY BETH AT HYDE PARK AND MMHMMM + GUERRE AT THE BAKERY + BROWN AT THE HYDE PARK HOTEL

When I tell you this, it might not seem true, but it is.

I’m sitting on the beach in Busselton and it is night. The moonlight is all across the water, so bright, even though the moon’s only just a half. My left foot is facing to the little saucepan, and my right foot to the big saucepan – Orion’s Belt. I used my laptop to light a little the way down, so my feet would not tread on a snake, and Bonnie Prince Billy was singing to me all the way – “Big Friday”. The sound of the waves is as loud as the sound of Bonnie Prince Billy. The world of fringe: it's on!

Well gosh darn it, where do I start. Basically with Fringe World on, it’s mental in Perth for your pick of what to see and what to do on these cool Perth nights. I think the best to do is to grab a schedule, and head out for a night alternating between the cultural centre and the treasury venues. With that in mind there are some picks I’d put forward to you if you’re still wondering what’s worth a viewing. At the top of my list is a show I’ve advertised before, Sticks, Stones, Broken Bones. This masterful shadow puppetry show could be the best show at the Fringe this year, and deserves packed out audiences each night in the spiegeltent.

Jugular (brand new septum!)

at the fly by night, fremantle

Sometimes this heat becomes too great and we fashion ourselves some well ventilated hideaway but it is no use, sense melts to puddles. But these balmy nights do well to get us out of these sweatshop buildings in search of drink and music. On such a night you could imbi be the Psychedelic Funk stylings of the Misty Mountain, the soaring pop punk and lyrical storytelling of Cautious Horsemen, sassy tinkling of pianist George IV of the Curious Characters and a few fresh and green acts including Miranda and Gordo, word and song by Patrick Marlborough (The PC Kid). As well as a jumble of Fremantles finest opening the night under the name Big Steve and the Bees. Thus we invite you to be entertained in the cavernous magical land of the Fly By Night with icy drink and fruit salad. The first in another year of Jugular events hosted by the foundling artist collective of the same name.

Stay hydrated. Entry $5

Most club nights let Dj’s play just because they know the promoter, we pick ours because they are some of the best Perth has to offer…

Life in Miniature

in northbridge

Cramped, cosy, cool contemporary dance.

Want to test drive life in a caravan before you take that trip around Australia? Anything is Valid Dance Theatre, a Perth-based contemporary dance company serves up their unique perspective of a road trip in the confines of a caravan at the 2012 Perth Fringe Festival.

Life in Miniature explores the great Australian caravan holiday, an experience to be endured or embraced. Reflecting on the inevitable experiences of spending long periods on the road, interactions become magnified and reality becomes distorted as two friends living out of a caravan try to survive the elements… and each other.

Funny and poignant, this is an engaging work created for an intimate audience that invites you to reflect on life on a small scale

at the treasury mess hall

Ellandar Productions re-stages its debut theatrical work, 'A Night of Deceit' at the Perth Fringe World Festival, 2012.

With an ensemble of both new and original cast members, a theatrical re-structuring and a completely new thematic direction, this promises to be a VERY different show from the original.

The twisting tongues of con-men adept in wordplay, the dirty desires of two underground NYC criminals, the lost misguided soul of an alien at a train station, a corrupt police officer infatuated with a whore and the salacious tongue of a gay sex therapist.

These are the men and women of our sordid affairs.

Witness as the lies that live in all of us cause the deconstruction of good people and bad people in both comedic and dramatic settings. The show that unravels the truth in the lie.
