We hope you had a lovely December and that your 2015 has gotten off to a good start! We've been busy at Tally Beck Contemporary and have a lot of exciting projects and exhibitions planned for the year.
Last year was a busy year for us. TBC mounted five solo exhibitions in New York and one in Los Angeles as well in as participating in Art Market Hamptons, The Los Angeles Art Show, Texas Contemporary, and Art Market San Francisco. We also conducted numerous art tours in New York and offered gallery talks on topics including Japanese art history, Angkor Wat, traffic cone aesthetics, and Traditional Chinese Medicine. In early December, we participated in the third year of Miami Project and exhibited work by Helen Beekman, Niccolo Cosme, island6, Nobuhito Nishigawara, Tom Techawong, and Jon Tsoi. Our booth and Tom Techawong’s monumental watercolors specifically were spotlighted in Interior Design magazine.
On December 10, TBC opened Animating the Word: The Legacy of Iran's Minority Calligraphic Traditions at the gallery, featuring work by Ani Babaian (Armenian), Hannibal Alkhas, Samuel Khangaldy (Assyrian), Solayman Sassoon (Jewish), Siamak Jamshidizadeh, Pooneh Oshidari, and Kourosh Vafadari (Zoroastrian). Inspirational concept for this unique show of calligraphy-inspired painting from Iran comes from Richard N. Frye (1920-2014), the first holder of the Aga Khan Professorship in Iranian Studies at Harvard University. This exhibition was co-curated by Dr. Frye's widow, Dr. Eden Naby, and by Tally Beck and is dedicated to Dr. Frye's memory. The New York showing has been extended until January 31, after which it will travel to cities in the United States and abroad. Keep in touch with us for the tour dates and locations. Behnam Nateghi filed a story for Voice of America about the exhibition.
Tally Beck Contemporary is delighted to be a sponsor of Sedona World Wisdom Days from January 15 to 19 in Sedona, Arizona. This conference will feature talks and performances by a wide range of inspirational speakers and artists, including legendary television producer Norman Lear, Olympic gold medalist Greg Louganis, and Grammy Award-winning singer India.Arie. Tally Beck will be exhibiting drawings by Thai artist Be Takerng Pattanopas.
In conjunction with its current exhibition, Animating the Word: The Legacy of Iran's Minority Calligraphic Traditions, TBC will host a reception and gallery talk that will contexualize the artwork and give the historical background of the minority groups in Iran, including the Armenians, Assyrians, Jews and Zoroastrians. We will begin with a Tiger Beer reception at 6:00 p.m., and then co-curators Dr. Eden Naby and Tally Beck will each present a brief lecture beginning around 7:30.
On Friday, January 30, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., Tally Beck Contemporary will host a reception and fundraising auction for Aliim, a not-for-profit organization that brings education into the hands of Syrian refugees who have missed out on schooling since the start of the conflict in 2011. The event is free of charge. Tiger Beer, cocktails and wine will be served all evening. At approximately 7:30, there will be an auction to benefit the organization, and among the items on the block will be an original painting by Turkish artist Yiğit Yazıcı.
We are also planning another active year of art fair participation, including two new fairs in New York and Seattle, so please follow us on our website tbc.nyc, Facebook, and Twitter for regular updates.
