Deal Highlight

GWI

For many of us, it is hard to imagine not having access to high-speed Internet. There are still communities in Maine that lack this vital service connecting people to economic development and opportunity. GWI's innovative vision to create what is now called the "Three Ring Binder" project is making it possible for GWI and other Internet Service Providers to bring broadband statewide. The network passes through approximately 172 towns in the state, including many in very rural areas.

Letter from Ron Phillips

Strengthening Our Community Base

Ron Phillips' Photo

It's official! In 2015, CEI will consolidate our Portland and Wiscasset, Maine, offices and move approximately 72 of our 88 staff members to brand-new, energy-efficient headquarters in Brunswick. CEI is comprised of many parts, both within the "parent" and through its special purpose subsidiaries. Within each of these parts, there is constant energy driving change, innovation and impact. We learn here in Maine, and then stretch our place-based efforts to other rural markets, being careful to maintain our community base. "CEI Central" will help us capture that energy to achieve another level of scale, permanence and impact.

Speaking of scale, Maine Community Health Options, Maine's new consumer owned and oriented plan (CO-OP) and recipient of a 2014 CEI loan, more than doubled projections enrolling nearly 40,000 people in its initial enrollment period ending in April.

CEI Platform for Sustainable Lending & Investing

A Place in Maine

61.3 percent of Maine's population lives in rural areas, enjoying over 3,500 miles of coastline, 6,000 lakes and ponds, and 17 million acres of forest. In fact, Maine has more trees per person than any other state: 16,751.

It's no surprise then, that CEI's five-year $128MM Platform for Sustainable Lending and Investing supports key natural resource sectors: sustainable fisheries, aquaculture, agriculture, food systems, forestry practices, and renewable energy companies.
