Hoewel we nog enkele leuke bands in de pijplijn hebben zitten voor AMF 2014 (geloof ons, het venijn zit in de staart) maken we vandaag, met de Vlaamse Leeuw hoog boven ons heen zwaaiend, de enige twee Belgische bands bekend die deze zomer op het festival zullen aantreden. De eerste zou er, in normale omstandigheden, vorig jaar reeds gespeeld hebben, maar een onverwachte en inmiddels welbekende wending gooide pikzwart roet in het eten. Van een ding waren we rotsvast overtuigd: CHANNEL ZERO zou terugslaan. Was het niet dit jaar dan wel een volgend. Maar het overgebleven trio raapte de moed vlugger bijeen dan aanvankelijk verwacht en slaat ons zelfs op dit eigenste ogenblik keihard om de oren met een ferme nieuwe plaat. Channel Zero is uit op revanche, revanche op het verleden en alle ellende die er mee gepaard is gegaan. Dat het niet zo maar “één van de concerten” gaat worden, staat als een paal boven water. Wel eentje waar ze de wrange smaak van vorig jaar steevast zullen willen wegspoelen. Eerbetoon aan Phil zal er zijn. Een krop in de keel? Ook dat betwijfelen we niet. Maar dat de band onder stoom zal staan, dat weten we wel heel zeker. Lees meer.

De show van CHANNEL ZERO in De Kreun te Kortrijk van aanstaande zaterdag is overigens COMPLEET uitverkocht.

Wie geen ticket heeft kunnen bemachtigen voor De Kreun, kan hier reserveren om CHANNEL ZERO aan het werk te zien op zaterdag 9 augustus.

Toen we vorig jaar Channel Zero aankondigden, hadden we zoiets van: ‘eindelijk’. We waren toen al een paar jaar bezig om de band naar Alcatraz te krijgen, maar telkens kwam er wel iets tussen. Het is een beetje met hetzelfde gevoel dat we vandaag DIABLO BLVD aankondigen. Op de redactie van Rock Tribune loopt echter een bende die-hard fans rond van het vijftal uit Antwerpen en die hebben het de voorbije maanden niet nagelaten om hooligangewijs en met gebalde vuist pressie uit te oefenen op de bookers van het festival. Plat gestoken autobanden, dreigbrieven, ja zelfs enkele stenen door onze ramen,… de gebruikelijke ‘druk’ dus. En ook al likken we nog onze wonden, we weten de inspanningen inmiddels naar waarde te schatten. Tenminste, als we de nieuwe plaat horen die binnenkort gaat verschijnen. Op ‘Follow The Deadlights’ worden alle registers open getrokken en wordt er weinig, om niet te zeggen niets, aan het toeval overgelaten. Het is deze keer dan ook menens voor Alex & Co. Lees meer.

Als in 1989 het gelijknamige debuutalbum van Skid Row verschijnt, slaat de band meteen in als een bom. De videoclip voor het nummer 'Youth Gone Wild', een van de zovele hits op de plaat, wordt grijs gedraaid op MTV en ook ons, rebellen die we toen waren, zit de song als gegoten. Glamrock met een vuil randje, lekker! Skid Row was destijds misschien wel de laatste hair metalband die commercieel succes oogst, alvorens het grunge-beest genadeloos toeslaat. De plaat scoort vijf keer platina in eigen land, maar ook in Europa loopt het storm voor deze wildemannen uit New Jersey die bij aanvang van hun carrière op sleeptouw worden genomen door ene Jon Bon Jovi. Het zal niemand verbazen dat opvolger 'Slave To The Grind' meteen op nummer 1 binnenkomt in de Amerikaanse charts en het voor de band opeens allemaal wel heel erg hard gaat. Wanneer Nirvana (heel even toch) de muziekwereld gaat domineren, last Skid Row een pauze in om vervolgens toe te slaan met 'Subhuman Race'. De jaren stilte hebben de groep blijkbaar geen goed gedaan en verder succes blijft uit. De relatie tussen zanger Sebastian Bach en de rest van de band raakt verzuurd en dwaalt af naar een dieptepunt. Niet veel later is het over met de pret. Bach gaat solo en Skid Row wordt op een laag pitje gezet. Pas in 1999 laten oprichters en voornaamste songschrijvers Dave "The Snake" Sabo en Rachel Bolan opnieuw van zich horen met de toetreding van Johnny Sollinger als nieuwe zanger. Sollinger, die grote schoenen te vullen heeft (Bach heeft een 45), slaagt met verve en maakt inmiddels vijftien jaar deel uit van deze nog steeds tot de verbeelding sprekende band. Het aanstekelijke ‘Monkey Business’, de sleaze rocker ‘Big Guns’, opzwepende songs als ‘Slave To The Grind’ en het eerder vermelde ‘Youth Gone Wild’, de onvermijdelijke powerballads ‘I Remember You’ en ‘18 And Life’, gegarandeerd dat we ze allemaal te horen krijgen in De Kreun.

Kerstmis ligt inmiddels ver achter ons en op Pasen is het nog even wachten, maar wij presenteren u alvast een gloednieuwe supervette en extra dikke uitgave van Rock Tribune. In deze editie is alweer een uitgebreide reeks interviews en een massa cd besprekingen te vinden. Hoeven we het nog te herhalen dat we er ook nu weer een cd sampler hebben bijgevoegd, met daarop een reeks fijne nummers van al even fijne artiesten? U krijgt er een poster van Diablo Blvd zo maar gratis bovenop. Ja, u kunt zelfs een gitaar van DIO winnen! Openen doen we met titty twister en neen dat is (voorlopig) geen nieuwe vaste rubriek. We lieten de "stoere binken" van Steel Panther een tiental koppel vrouwen- en (bah!) mannenborsten zien in alle vormen en formaten. Zij mochten er hun mening over geven en we kunnen u alvast vertellen dat er uit die mannen geen zinnig woord te halen valt. De (cover)foto's (enkel van Steel Panther en neen, niet van de tieten) zijn overigens van de hand van ons jonge talent: Tim Tronckoe. Onze journalist Stef Maes had tevens een wel zeer uitgebreide babbel met de mannen van Diablo Blvd en Channel Zero en ook hun relaas staat te lezen in Rock Tribune #134.

Although we still have some great bands for AMF 2014, today our Flemish lion is high above with the only two Belgian bands who will perform at the festival this summer. The first one would have already played last year, but due to unexpected circumstances it turned out the other way. We were absolutely convinced of one thing: CHANNEL ZERO would strike back! And if it wasn’t for this year it would happen the next. But the trio picked up their courage faster together than initially expected and are back now with a killer new album. Channel Zero is out for revenge, revenge for the past and all the misery associated. It’s absolutely clear this will not be just ‘one of the shows’. They will kick ass and blow away the bitter taste from last year. Of course there will be a tribute to Phil and we are quite sure the band will impress. Read more.

The CHANNEL ZERO show this Saturday in Courtrai is COMPLETELY sold out.

Last year when we announced Channel Zero it was like: ‘finally’. We were then trying to get the band to Alcatraz for a few years but every time there came something in between. It’s about the same feeling we have today while announcing DIABLO BLVD. However, at the Rock Tribune headquarters there is a core of die-hard fans around the band from Antwerp who did not failed to apply pressure hooligan-wise and with clenched fists to the bookers from the festival. Flat tires, threatening letters, and even a few stones through our windows…the usual ‘pressure’. And though we are still healing we know to estimate the efforts to value. At least when we hear the new album which will be released soon. On ‘Follow The Deadlights’ the band used all their qualities and left nothing to chance. Therefore it’s serious for Alex & co. So damned serious that even Agnew puts his comedy career on hold in favour of the band. Not obvious if you know the man sells out several arena’s in no time. Read more.

As the eponymous debut album by Skid Row appears in 1989, it turned out to be an immediate success. The video clip for the song ‘Youth Gone Wild’, one of the many hits on the album, is in heavy rotation on MTV and also for ourselves this song was a perfect fit. Glam rock with a dirty edge, just great! Perhaps Skid Row was one of the last hair metal bands with a commercial success before the grunge-beast mercilessly strikes. The album scored five times platinum in their home country but also Europe was successful for the guys from New Jersey who were taken care off by a man called Jon Bon Jovi. Of course it’s no surprise that their successor ‘Slave To The Grind’ got straight to number one in the US charts. When Nirvana is dominating (briefly) the music world Skid Row takes a break and strikes back later with ‘Subhuman Race’. Apparently the time of silence was not in the band’s advantage and the album did not turned out into a success. In the meantime the relationship between singer Sebastian Bach and the other band members becomes sored and not much later it’s all over. Bach is going solo and Skid Row takes another break. Until 1999 the founders and main song writers Dave “The Snake” Sabo and Rachel Bolan are back with the accession of Johnny Sollinger as a new singer. Sollinger, who had not an easy job, succeeds and is now for 15 years part of this still imaginative band. The infectious ‘Monkey Business’ and ‘Slave To The Grind’, rousing songs like ‘Big Guns’ and the aforementioned ‘Youth Gone Wild’, the unavoidable power ballads ‘I Remember You’ and ’18 And Life’, we are sure they all will be heard at De Kreun on June 13th.
