Tackling the foreclosure crisis
Today's start of the legislative session means the clock is officially ticking on how long legislators have to address Oregon’s ongoing foreclosure crisis. EFO will be in Salem this month working hard to pass a package of three foreclosure protection bills this session. We've been fortunate enough to have the Register-Guard, Oregonian and
Statesman-Journal editorial boards endorse these bills, and we hope legislators will give this issue the attention it deserves.
We decided to focus on foreclosures this session because we needed to prioritize our legislative agenda given the tight timeframe. This is, by far, the number one issue consumers come to us with. We recently had the opportunity to meet Salem resident Ginny Real at a community foreclosure forum put on by EFO. Fighting back tears, Ginny shared the story of how she lost her South Salem home. Click here to read more about Ginny's story.
Oregonians deserve better than what happened to Ginny. That’s exactly why we believe in these bills. These are not radical ideas. They are common sense. Please call your legislators and ask them to support these necessary consumer protections – it’s an easy and effective way to make your voice heard:
- Dial 1-800-332-2313 to be connected to your legislators based on your address. Just say you are a constituent and you want to urge the representative or senator to support the foreclosure-related bills before them this session. The bill numbers are: SB 1552 & 4140, HB 4137 and SB 1564. If you get a voicemail, leave a message. If you reach a legislative aide, leave your message with them. Please encourage your friends and family to call too!
We want to keep you informed of how the foreclosure issue progresses, so we've built a countdown clock for the days left in session and will be updating our website
regularly with dispatches from Salem, hearing schedules on the bills and what you can do to help. Head over to our blog today to read insider reflections on the first day of session from our Executive Director Angela Martin.
Our consumer advocacy is funded by donations from the public. Please consider making a contribution to help us continue our work fighting for the financial rights of Oregonians!
