End of Year 2019 NEWSLETTER

Dear Partners,

Season’s greetings! It's been a busy past few months for LISC NYC and I’m pleased to share some highlights of our work with our community-based, government and philanthropic partners to create a more equitable and inclusive city for all New Yorkers.

On the affordable housing front, we launched NYLOP 2.0 this summer to help mission-driven organizations develop and preserve affordable housing on their land. In the area of economic development, we kicked off a second round of the Commercial Corridor Challenge to support community-based organizations to strengthen small businesses and corridors in their neighborhoods. We also continued to build out our economic development and community facilities lending, enabling several major projects to get to closing through our technical assistance and financing. Finally, in the area of health, we moved into the implementation phase of Bridges to Health Equity, a multi-partner home-based asthma prevention program that will enable community-based organizations, health care providers, and managed care organizations to work together to improve family health and housing conditions. Special thanks to our major funders, profiled below, who enabled us to launch and expand these initiatives!

I wish you happy holidays and a wonderful New Year!

Warm regards,

Eva Neubauer Alligood
Interim Executive Director

Making Room for Manufacturing—and Manufacturing Jobs
A LISC and Urban Manufacturing Alliance white paper, “All About the Jobs,” describes eight mission-driven industrial projects and their financing models. All these projects are creating affordable space for small- and medium-sized manufacturers so they can bring benefits—good jobs, especially—to the surrounding community. The paper profiles two LISC NYC partners, Evergreen and Greenpoint Manufacturing and Design Center, to whom we provided financing and technical assistance. Read the paper here...

Prosperity of Place, for Industry and for Workers
This LISC white paper examines emerging strategies that connect industrial district revitalization to local workforce efforts and how investments in industrial districts can fuel programs designed to train low-income residents and ensure they access local jobs. The paper takes a close look at how this plays out in the field with two case studies, including one on the Brooklyn Navy Yard in New York. Read the paper here...

On November 7th, LISC NYC community development officer Thomas Mitchell was a panelist at the Center for Creative Land Recycling (CCLR) event, “Urban Redevelopment: Building Stronger Communities.”  For more on CCLR’s work turning brownfields into community assets, check out this short video.
