We're holding a series of rountable discussions during October and November and it would be great to see members there.  The events will take place around Scotland and the themes are:

Gendering the child poverty debate - Edinburgh

Gendering the care - Stirling

Trans women and Feminism - Perth

Rural Women's participation - Inverness, Argyll and Bute

Gender and Asylulm - Glasgow

Childcare costs force women to choose

The Guardian reported last week on an Aviva survey which found that within the last year 32,000 women have given up paid employment to look after family, most citing the high cost of childcare as the reason.  Read more 

Another week and another study.  This one by Save the Children and the Daycare Trust which reported that paying for childcare was putting families in debt.  Read more

Meanwhile the Government pushes ahead with changes to child benefit and working tax credit which will result in less money for families.   All fuelling fears that women will be pushed back into the home as a resut of the recession. 

Violence against Women and Sport

Organisers of the London Olympics have assured EVAW (End Violence Against Women) that Games leaders will 'champion women’s equality publicly as a central part of London 2012’s legacy.'  EWAW produced a report in July which reviewed evidence into connections between vaw and sport.  Read report

Encouraging women into Science, engineering and Technology

Today's Herald had a good piece on getting more women into  jobs in science, engineering and technology.  At our 'Jobs for the Boys and Girls?' event in February women from this sector spoke of the frustration of working in an area that does little to recruit and retain women.  Read article (you must register on Herald site to read full article)
