The session will take place on Microsoft Teams this Wednesday, 15th July at 10:00am BST to address any questions you might have. An invitation will be sent to you. You can submit questions anonymously via this form or you can ask them directly on the day. (Book club, but for cases!) This week Case Club will be at the new time of 6pm. We will discuss the topic of 'Doctrine of Frustration', particularly in relation to the Covid-19 pandemic. We are working with the Peer Support Team to set up a mentoring scheme for year 2 students to support the new year 1 law firms in settling into our degree programmes and working within firms. We hope to have the programme up and running in good time for the new academic year and will send out more information as soon as we can. Meanwhile we need a name/ brand for the scheme. (Examples names of existing schemes include: UEBS Buddy Up Scheme, SPA Buddy Scheme, Global Chums, Law Transistion2HE). Please submit your name ideas below. The sanctions cover ‘an individual’s right to life, freedom from torture and will affect those profiting or benefiting from abuses. TikTok halts Hong Kong access after security law BBC News The social media platform and short-video app suspends operations in HK after China imposes new security law restricting freedoms in the semi-autonomous city. Facebook and Twitter are also reportedly also reviewing operations in HK. In comparative reverse, TikTok’s headquarters are based in China, causing US Secretary of State and Australian MP calling for more scrutiny on the data and privacy policies. First charity to provide legal aid to the social care sector launches LawCareers.net Access Social Care has been created in partnership with Baker McKenzie, Orrick, Shearman & Sterling and Slaughter and May, together with expert social care barristers. The aim is to support individuals who need access to social care but cannot afford it. This is triggered by 95% of UK councils reporting concerns they will not be able to deliver care obligations in 2020. Furlough Fraud- Man arrested under suspicion of £500k coronavirus job retention scheme fraud The Guardian This is the first arrest in line with fraudulent activities of the furlough scheme, and is not expected to be the last. HMRC declared they are dealing with 4400 report for furlough fraud.
