December 2011

Tis the Season to be Jolly

December is upon us and the first blasts of winter are hitting all regions of Ontario; Jackie reports that she is seeing a great start to winter, and her fingers are crossed that the small amount of snow they have will soon be joined by much, much more for the holiday season!

In Algonquin Park, the news from camp is exciting! With ice now forming on Canoe Lake and the road into Ahmek being plowed by our maintenance crew, the quietness of winter, with its blanket of unspoiled white covering is interrupted, every now and then, by the thud of a hammer and the buzz of an electric saw. A new cabin is forming where last summer the remnants of a burned out building used to be.  For those of you who have attended Camp for a while, you may have noticed that Dr. Taylor Statten and the Hon. Janet Boland were not at Camp last summer and that their cherished cabin was no longer snuggled in the bush just past the tennis courts. With a new cabin being built Dr. Tay and Janet can comfortably join us once again at Ahmek this summer.  Just to let you know, Dr. Tay will be celebrating his 97th birthday in April 2012 and Janet, although much younger, wants everyone to guess her age.

Of course, there is other activity that goes on during the winter. David Standfield, is busy repairing old and building new canoes. When he’s not ploughing the road, David is a master canoe builder and an expert on Tom Thomson. Luckily for him winter up at camp is not a lonely place to be and he is in the good company of Bill Statten, our Head of Maintenance.  Who works to constantly assess Camp infrastructure and ensure that buildings, boats and motors, pipes and engines, solar panels and ploughing equipment are in good repair for this year and many to come!

While it may seem as though winter has just arrived, our plans for next summer are well underway, as are the applications for next year and we are thrilled to see new and old names alike on our roster. With this in mind we hope you keep checking out the website, and the calendar of events from time to time to see new pictures and to watch the site evolve.

We hope that you have a fun, safe and memorable month (and hopefully a holiday) in whatever way you celebrate this time of year, and as your thoughts in this cold winter turn to warm evenings with our summer family; keep in mind the equipment and small things that the kids might need for the summer to come as you shop for presents or search through amazing sales.

All of us at the Taylor Statten Camps want to wish all campers, staff, parents and alumni the very best for the holidays and a fantastic New Year.

Sincerely,

Jackie, Jay, Robyn, Jon, Taylor, Andrew and Tike
