Message from the ChairUpdates from the ILS on COVID-19During COVID-19 restrictions, the International Law Section (ILS) Executive has been working on your behalf, and on behalf of the profession, to monitor developments in international public and private law. While we continue to review all available information and advisories issued by relevant health and government authorities, the ILS is unfortunately unable to plan any of its usual face to-face-meetings and events at this time. The ILS Executive is endeavoring to introduce podcasts and webinars during 2020-21 financial year, with a view to delivering the best possible value for ILS members in these circumstances. It is intended to provide a short series of webinar lectures on a range of international public and private law as part of the ILS International Law and Practice Course 3.0, as well as several podcasts. The ILS is also seeking to publish four brief newsletters/bulletins. Contributions from our members are most welcome. Please send any articles, short briefing notes or hyperlinks to relevant articles to Doris Wimmler, ILS Adminsitrator at Doris.Wimmler@lawcouncil.asn.au. In recognition of the difficulties COVID-19 is creating for our profession, the ILS is offering discounts to all renewing and new members for the 2020-2021 financial year. Membership includes complimentary access to the ILS International Law and Practice Course 3.0, which will be delivered in webinar format. COVID-19 has highlighted the importance of international law, and sharing the of best practice in domestic COVID-19 responses with international counterparts. The ILS encourages members to explore the online Symposium on COVID-19 and States of Emergency, hosted by Verfassungsblog and Democracy Reporting International. The symposium compiles comparative country reports to examine the use of emergency powers from the perspective of democracy, human rights and the rule of law. In addition, the International Bar Association website hosts a range of free webinars which may be of interest to ILS members. The ILS Executive looks
forward to continuing to engage with our members and expand the interface between Australian legal practice and international developments. Mary Walker |
