Hail Hot Bottlers!
You may have raised a glass to South Africa’s Heritage Day last week - with their local wine industry facing historic challenges I’ll be raising as many glasses as I can to support them over the coming weeks. Just one bottle can make a difference so please bear in mind our friends in South Africa when you’re picking your next bottle. My first Value Vino this week is a great example. VALUE VINO
Warwick First Lady Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 (14%) £7 on offer Tesco. Rich red with savoury power and spice. If you love Bordeaux reds, this feels like a burly relative that just wants to take you out on the town and show you the meaning of fun. Here’s to South African splendour. Yalumba Organic Viognier 2019 (13.5%) £9 M&S. Luxuriant silky white that’s like sipping the scent of peaches and honeysuckle. Breezy brilliance from Yalumba. Carlos Lucas Portuguese Dão 2018 (13%) £5.99 Aldi. Pinot Noir meets Rioja! This is elegant, savoury, classy and characterful red that defies belief at just over a fiver. You want this in your life. Feel the power of Portugal. IGP Méditerannée Domaine Saint Gayan 'Argiles' Blanc 2019 (13%) £9.75 yapp.co.uk Yapp are the best at seeking out secret French fabulousness and this lemony gem is a prime example. Vim and scrumptiousness - if you’re a fan of Picpoul de Pinet, this is the bottle to grab. Yerevan Areni/Karmrayhut Winemaker’s Blend Red, Armenia Wine Co 2016 (12.5%) £9.95 Tanners-wines.co.uk Sleek, bright silky red with a satin sheen, this awesome wine from Armenia reminds me of Beaujolais fused with Chianti. Hoover up the lot, it’s a stunner - and another indicator of Tanners being up there with the best independent wine merchants in Britain for seeking out the next big thing from off the beaten track. A GLASS WITH Thanks so much to everyone who’s signed up to support my podcast A Glass With via the new Patreon page, for extra content and exclusive access to shows and merchandise click here and come join me for a deeper dip into the world of wine. HARVEST TIME
The vines in my little corner of Sussex are almost ready for harvest, I love making my tiny batch of homemade vino every year from my mini Pinot Meunier vineyard, I'll keep you posted how it goes! I’m going to be hosting an online Q&A soon and you're the first to know - Hot Bottlers can ask me questions in advance by emailing hotbottle@ollysmith.com and the best question wins a bottle of wine from my cellar. You can ask me anything you like! Cheers all, Olly x |
