CHSC maintains a policy of never turning a child away due to a parent’s ability to pay. Families who cannot afford specialized services are the beneficiaries of our bursary programme to ensure their child has the best possible educational and health supports.

Special thanks to CKNW Orphan's Fund who contributed $24,000 to our bursary fund needs for 2011.

Anyone can donate to our bursary fund.  Contact sleclair@children'shearing.ca.

This is a busy place.

From the outside the Children's Hearing and Speech Centre looks like a humble modest school.  But amazing and big things are going on here!  Have a peek through the second edition of our E-newsletter and enjoy all the happenings.

Pictured here are students, families and friends enjoying a harvest celebration on October 6th in honour of thanksgiving.

Parental Influence

Margaret Liu's daughter Erica attends CHSC.  Margaret is also a very active member of the Tzu-Chi Foundation, a benevolent Buddist organization that supports countless worthy organizations.  Therefore it was a great honour to attend the Tzu-Chi Vancouver location on Sept 27th to meet volunteer members and accept a $10,000 donation in support of the Parent's Guidance Services.  Margaret's relationship with the organization was no doubt a big contributing factor to receiving this donation.

The funds were designated to the Parent's Guidance Program where partial funding went to revitalize the space.   The room has been designed to replicate a home enviroment to support the parents in working with their child in their own homes.   A grand opening celebration is in the works.  Thank you Tzu-Chi and to Margaret Liu for thinking of the funding needs of the school.

Talking Tips

Janet Weil, Principal is tackling this month's tip and wants to emphasize getting your child ready for learning.

It is a lot of work for kids to learn!  Now throw in their hearing loss and it's extra important for them to be ready at school to listen, to think, to talk.

As a parent and/or caregiver, you can help your child by creating a healthy routine for their morning.  Start by ensuring they are have a good night sleep.  Watching mom or dad eat a healthy nourishing breakfast is helpful in getting them eating their own breakfast.  Adding some protein to their morning diet and taking care that they are well hydrated, will help their energy levels hold for their day ahead.

There are lots of hellos when kids first arrive to school.  Giving them a few minutes before hand to say hi to their teachers and fellow students will help to eliminate distractions.  They will be more inclined to get underway on their daily learning journey.

Labels for Education Coordinator

Annabelle Cutting is one extraordinary woman!  She has single handedly lead an army of volunteers on collecting, organizing, bundling and sending over 250,000 (and that is probably a conservative estimate) Campbell Soup Product labels in support of CHSC.   Annabelle's daughter started attending the school in 1981.  Shortly after, Hilda Gregory recruited Annabelle to work as an early childhood educator.  She then spent the next 22 years as a devoted staff member.  Since she is retired, she has decided to step back from her volunteer role of Labels for Education Coordinator to make room for someone new.   If you are interested in championing this program, please contact Shawn at the school.

On behalf of CHSC Annabelle - THANK YOU!
