National Healthcare Decisions Day - April 16

We have noticed and appreciate the promotional events and activities surrounding National Healthcare Decisions Day. From Facebook Live events, to exhibits, radio programs, game nights, plays, and social media messaging, they are wonderful, enriching ways to highlight the importance of ACP and engage a variety of audiences. It is our pleasure and privilege to work with you all and we share your passion in ACP and honoring individuals' goals, values, and preferences.

"Hospices Narrow Demographic Divides in ACP," from February 2021 in Hospice News highlights that despite an increase in aging populations of color with serious illness and end-of-life care needs, research reflects a deepened racial divide in access to care and services. Advance care planning can provide the opportunity for individuals to identify the services and support that meet their unique needs and personal choices.

"As part of the whole health care system coming to grips with racial injustice and health care disparities, there is a focus on interventions that are more appropriate for different groups," said Marian Grant, senior regulatory advisor, Coalition to Transform Advanced Care (C-TAC).

C-TAC Virtual Policy Forum: How Policies and Innovations are Reshaping the Advance Care Planning Landscape

Advance care planning is more important than ever as we continue to address the COVID-19 pandemic. It has also become more challenging as visitation restrictions often separate families from their loved ones.

Join Respecting Choices' Executive Director Dr. Stephanie Anderson in a session that explores key policy opportunities that can boost access to and quality of ACP. Experts will also examine advance care planning through an equity lens, with help from a new survey.

Consider joining these conversations in order to drive policy change that ensures the most at risk among us have their voices heard and their wishes honored.

Date: Wednesday, May 12
Time: 12 - 5 PM ET

"ACP Upstream - Activating Communities, Embracing Conversations, Preparing for Crises"

This first-ever Around the World Digital Exchange, presented by ACP-i, will spotlight global efforts to push ACP upstream by activating communities and having ACP conversations before crises arise. Participants will learn more about grassroots initiatives in community engagement, national campaigns to spark conversations, ACP and its impact on preparedness for crises, and how ACP has supported different health systems throughout the pandemic.

The U.S. will be highlighted in several areas, including a plenary session from Dr. Christine Wilkins at Manhattan's NYU Langone Health with her presentation, "Effective and Innovative ACP Approaches/Best Practices in Health Care Response to the
COVID-19 Pandemic."
