This Weekʼs Line-Up

A loose leaf tea strainer
01

As a born and bred Englishwoman, tea rather than coffee is my working fuel. I’ve always wanted to go full snob with loose leaf, but I have found all strainers leaky and fiddly to clean – until now. IngenuiTEA’s bottom-emptying pot is simple, effective and produces the perfect brew, especially when filled with the amazing blends from London's Chash tea.

Track (and limit) your phone usage
02

I hate the overall philosophy of Tim Ferriss’s 4 Hour Work Week, but his advice to only check your emails twice a day really has transformed my working life. Moment, an iOS which tracks your iPhone and iPad usage, is a brilliant way to shock yourself into breaking your mobile addiction so you can prioritise what matters, stop social media procrastination and keep your downtime offline.

A plant-powered phone charger
03

My sister’s a forester who lives in the National Forest, and I live in a permanent state of guilt about my carbon footprint and unsustainable ways. Bioo’s phone-charging plant pot would both help assuage the guilt and add a welcome touch of green to my desk – as long as I can keep that damn plant alive.

A productivity tracker for writers
04

This new startup from Bristol applies trigger, hook and reward’ systems already at work in products like Fitbit, Nike+ and RunKeeper to create a productivity app for writers, helping them get from big idea to final draft. There’s a community element too and, having just finished my first novel, I know the importance of surrounding yourself with a circle of critics and cheerleaders when ploughing away on a long-term project. It's co-founded by an awesome woman, too.

Write with and chew on these key words
05

I write using a dual digital/analogue system, typing copy on the screen while making notes in a Moleskine cahier (because I’m that big a cliche). Using simple pencils is a good reminder that words are disposable and ever-improvable, and this literary set from the School of Life cheekily prints the tools of the trade onto the tools of the trade.

Stormy weather on demand
06

I’m a big believer in being able to write anywhere, anytime and plugging into Rainy Mood, which streams the sound of stormy weather on loop, produces a wash of natural white noise that helps me tap straight into the flow. It’s also perfect if you work in the hell, otherwise known as an open plan office. Be warned, however. Scout out the location of the nearest toilet first!

It’s dark because you are trying too hard. Lightly child, lightly. Learn to do everything lightly.
