Wake up to Ben

space

Ever wonder how people end up in their chosen profession?  For young radio jock, Ben Rae (pictured above), it was through an email.

The email was about a radio traineeship at Bumma Bippera Media which operates 98.7FM in Cairns.  Ben applied for the traineeship, got it and applied himself to his new-found passion.

Through his traineeship Ben gained practical experience and acquired Certificates III and IV in Screen and Media (originally Radio Broadcasting) and is now employed full-time as a presenter.

He hosts his own show in the highly competitive breakfast slot.

“I’m waking everyone up in the morning so when they're driving to work I got to get them geared for the day," he explained to Stayin' Strong.

"They want to hear an exciting program so I try and make my show as excited and energetic as I can,” Ben says.

Why fellas should ask for help

Murri Watch Mens Shed sign

If you're a bloke experiencing some troubles in your life what would be your choice of action? Do nothing and tough it out? Or would you look for help?

You're not alone if you chose to do nothing. Men are socialised to be strong and in control and relying on others for help may be percieved as a sign of weakness.  The downside with this approach is that it could make matters worse.

If you're not ready to seek professional advice, what are your options?

Talking to a mate is a start.  In fact, did you know having a good friend to confide in extends your lifespan - whether it's your partner or someone else - than others who don't have that kind of support around them?

If you don't have that support, you may find it at a local men's shed.  Read more about them here.

In Brisbane there's one specifically for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander males run by Murri Watch.

“In this day and age, so many of our men across the broader community are really doing it hard…really doing it tough," says Sam Watson Snr, founder of the Murri Watch Men's shelter.

It's a space where men can meet regularly to talk through their problems in a confidential, therapuetic and spirital manner.

"This gives them an opportunity to just reach out to other blokes and assist them to redefine themselves,” he says.

For more information call Murri Watch on 3844 1540
