Thank You, Dawn!

At the Foundation’s recent Annual Meeting, Board member Ms. Dawn Hoffman submitted her resignation from the Board of Directors. Dawn and her husband Al Hoffman, the former US Ambassador to Portugal, have moved to North Palm Beach where they are building a new house in Lost Tree Village.

Ms. Hoffman is a Founding Member of the Juno Beach Police Foundation and has been an active and supporting member since its inception in 2018.

Foundation President Tom Murphy commented: “we are grateful for Dawn’s leadership, generosity, and friendship over the last four years. She was very instrumental in the initial forming of the Foundation and throughout her tenure numerous significant grants were made to the Juno Beach Police Department. Her guidance, leadership, and efforts to help keep Juno Beach safe will be missed as the Foundation moves forward. We thank Dawn for her commitment to the Town of Juno Beach and wish her and Al every success in the future.”

Completed - An Important Grant Request!

In last month's newsletter we mentioned a grant request from the Police Department to provide additional protection for our Juno Beach Police Officers.

There was a time when Police Officers went about their business in everyday uniforms. But in today's world Body Armor is an essential part of the personal protective equipment worn by all law enforcement officers. And until recently, gear made with DuPont™ Kevlar® was used to help protect them from potentially fatal or disabling injuries from handgun fire.

Now, increased interactions with criminals involves the use of assault rifles. Kevlar unfortunately is incapable of stopping these high powered rounds.

The body armor industry has come out with additional protection in the form of ceramic plates that can halt these high speed incoming rounds. These new plates are both lightweight and highly dependable.

When Chief Smith asked the Police Foundation to fund this new protective gear we urgently and immediately approved his $7,000 Grant Request.

As a result, the ballistic vests being worn by all the members of the Juno Beach Police Department now provide a much higher level of protection. A level we hope they will never need, but should they, it's there!

The Police Foundation - working to help increase the Quality of Life in Juno Beach by supporting our dedicated Police Officers.

Got Drugs A Big Success

The DEA sponsored Drug Take-back day on April 30th, known as "Got Drugs?" was a tremendous success in Juno Beach. Police Detective Ryan Hoffmann along with our Police Volunteers, received nearly 35 pounds of unused prescription drugs that were turned in at the Police Station. The October 2021 Take Back Day brought in 744,082 lbs. (372 Tons) of medication nationwide and April 2022's total is expected to exceed that.

We appreciate your efforts to help remove unneeded medications as a measure of preventing medication misuse.

New Police Department Grant Requests

At our Annual Meeting, Chief of Police Brian Smith asked the Police Foundation to approve two additional Grant Requests, in the category of Training, for our Juno Beach Police Officers.

  • Self Defense Training - Police Officers are increasingly often coming up against criminals who, often as a result of drug usage, want to go hands-on with Law Enforcement. These individuals tend to become combative, and situations can rapidly turn deadly. Highly skilled Officers can potentially save the lives of not only the Officers themselves but the suspects as well.

Having the necessary skills to control the situation leads to less opportunities for a combative situation to escalate by keeping suspects from getting to and gaining control of Officers weapons and/or putting the Officers in vulnerable positions where they feel the need to use deadly force.

Chief Smith asked the Police Foundation to fund the ongoing self-defense training of two of our Police Officers. As these Officers become more highly trained, they will then instruct our other Juno Beach Police Officers.

  • Police Gym Improvements - The Town of Juno Beach recently received a private donation of $50,000 worth of new gym equipment for the use of all Town employees.

As the gym is most frequently used by our Police Officers, Chief Smith asked the Police Foundation to fund additional upgrades and improvements to the facility. This will encourage our Officers to utilize the new equipment more often and further improve their tactical skills.

  • The Juno Beach Police Foundation was quick to approve these important Officer Training requests submitted by Chief Smith.

Police Foundation Annual Campaign

The Annual Campaign of the Juno Beach Police Foundation began in December 2021 and continues well into 2022.

Incorporated in 2018, the Police Foundation has, with the support of the community, purchased numerous important items for the Juno Beach Police Department to help improve both their efficiency and community safety.

Grants from the Foundation to the Juno Beach Police Department well exceed $250,000.

With your support and that of the overall Juno Beach community the Juno Beach Police Foundation will continue in its efforts to "Help Ensure the Safety of Juno Beach." Thank You!
