Celebrating Our Everyday Heroes: Annual Blue Mass Honors Police, Firefighters, and EMS

The Blue Mass, held annually in churches across the nation, is a cherished tradition that pays tribute to the courage and dedication of first responders of all faiths. This year, the Catholic Cathedral of St. Ignatius Loyola in Palm Beach Gardens hosted the annual Blue Mass on Oct. 2, recognizing the invaluable service of local police officers, firefighters and EMS personnel. Several Juno Beach police personnel and citizens attended this year's event as well.

Bishop Gerald M. Barbarito, who led the Mass, noted that the men and women of law enforcement, firefighting and EMS are truly angels in our community, risking their lives every day to protect us. He commented that "their courage and commitment to serving others is something we honor today and always."

The Blue Mass is celebrated near the feast of St. Michael the Archangel, as he is the patron saint of police officers, firefighters and all first responders. The bishop offered prayers for the safety of all those in attendance as well as those who were unable to attend due to shift work and other commitments.

Capt. Steve Thibodeau of the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, who organizes the Mass each year, expressed gratitude for the community's support, noting that all first responders rely on strong partnerships with the public.

A representative of the Diocese of Palm Beach, which encompasses five counties, noted the growing participation of various local agencies, including the Sheriff's Office, local police departments, corrections departments, fire departments and EMS personnel. They commented that, as these first responders go out each day, our prayer is that they return safely and continue their work serving the community to the best of their abilities.

Next year's Blue Mass is tentatively scheduled for Monday, September 29th, and the Juno Beach Police Foundation hopes to see even more Juno Beach Police personnel and local citizens in attendance.
