Editor's note

As Astronomer Royal and a former president of the Royal Society, Martin Rees has much to say about some of the world's – and the universe's – biggest questions. In an exclusive interview conducted at Trinity College, Cambridge, Rees talks about the value of looking beyond the horizon, and why the coming decade will bring us closer to understanding the origin of life and what it might tell us about the likelihood of alien species. As a member of the House of Lords, Rees also talks candidly about Brexit, the importance of expert voices and the power of speaking to everyday people.

The Conversation UK has really grown over the last four years – and we couldn't have done it without you, our readers. All our articles are free, whether these are fact-checking claims made by politicians, asking experts to tackle some of the most complex questions of our time, or just making the most of fun stories that also enlighten. As a charity, we ask once a year if you will help support our mission as we continue to provide alternative voices – not alternative facts. Click here to become a supporter.
