CID Wins 2011 Smart Growth Technical Assistance Award from the EPA
The Cumberland CID is among only eight communities in the country that have been selected to receive direct assistance from the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Smart Growth Implementation Assistance (SGIA) Program.
The SGIA Program was created by the EPA to support communities that foster economic growth, protect environmental resources, enhance public health, and plan for development by providing the tools, resources, and information to achieve their goals.
As a recipient of the award, the CID will receive direct technical assistance from a team of national experts tailored uniquely to Cumberland’s priorities. The CID plans to utilize this assistance to create infrastructure financing programs for the transit-oriented infrastructure in Cobb County.

CID Honored with Two Urban Planning Awards
The Georgia Planning Association and the International Downtown Association recently recognized the CID’s achievements with awards from their respective organizations.
The 2010 Georgia Planning Association Chapter Awards were given October 1 to projects and plans that show innovation, replication, effectiveness, public participation, technology, equity, quality and sustainability. The Cumberland CID received honorable mention in the “Outstanding Planning Document for a Large Community” category for the groundbreaking Green Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) Framework developed by Sizemore Group and Gordon Burns & Associates.
The TOD Framework was developed to provide a framework for the transformation of Cumberland into a transit-ready, livable community and to empower local and regional stakeholders to compete for the funds that will make their collective vision a reality.

Additionally, the International Downtown Association, a Washington D.C.-based advocate and supporter of vital and livable urban centers, presented the CID with its IDA Merit Award on October 2. The IDA Downtown Achievement Awards recognize the most successful and innovative projects that have made a difference in downtown renewal. The CID was selected from a field of 73 qualified candidates for the award.

Georgia Transmission Corp. Energizes Substation; CID Landscapes Surrounding Area
The Cumberland CID recently worked with Georgia Transmission Corp. (GTC), a not-for-profit company that builds and maintains high-voltage power lines for the state’s electric cooperatives, on the construction and landscaping of a new substation located at the Cobb Parkway/I-285 interchange.
Due to the growing population in the Cumberland area, the new substation was needed to ensure continued reliable power for area residents and businesses. GTC worked with the CID to install landscaping and a decorative wall around the substation to maintain the manicured appearance of the intersection. GTC also allowed the CID to install a new gateway sign in the substation right of way to designate and enhance the Cumberland area.

The new substation was energized in August 2010 and will help ensure that the growing Cumberland community continues to have reliable electric service.

CID’s Involvement in Transportation Services Supports Region’s Economy
A recent Atlanta Regional Commission study has reaffirmed the benefits of the CID and regional transportation improvements — helping our economy and workforce.
Below are key findings from the survey of 50,000 bus and rail transit riders across the region:
- Nearly three-quarters (73 percent) of respondents can drive to work but choose to ride transit
- Almost half (45 percent) of all trips are taken between home and work
- About two-thirds (64 percent) of respondents using transit to get to work have limited or no access to a car
