Grading reminders and deadlines

May 10, 2018

While INSIGHTS is typically focused on your role as advisers, we’re dedicating this week’s edition to end-of-term grading - how to submit grades and how students view them.

If you’ve already submitted your grades, we hope you found the transition to SSOL Web Grading a smooth one.

If you haven’t yet submitted grades, here are a few tips:

  • Prioritize grades for graduating seniors.  SSOL allows you to view graduating seniors on a separate grade roster from other students. You can submit individual grades for seniors – without submitting the rest of the grades. We encourage you to do this so that the Registrar’s Office can clear students for graduation ASAP.
  • Make grade submission easier by using the new features that come with SSOL Web Grading: sort your roster in different ways; assign a teaching assistant to act as a proxy and save grades for you; import grades from Courseworks/Canvas; submit grade change requests for Spring '18 classes from within SSOL.
  • Watch for warnings of system timeout after 5 minutes of inactivity.  If logged out, just log back in and you will be able to resume work where you left off.
  • Email grades@barnard.edu with any questions.

Also, don’t forget senior grades are due TOMORROW, Friday, May 11 by 11:59 p.m. and all other grades are due on Thursday, May 17 by 11:59 p.m.

When and where can students view their grades?  Grades display on student transcripts in myBarnard/Student Planning the morning after the faculty member submits them (assuming the student’s grade is not blocked due to an incomplete course evaluation).  If you have students or advisees with blocked grades, you can reassure them that all grades will be unblocked on Friday, May 25.
Grades for special situations:

  • "I" grades are to be used for incomplete work other than the final exam. Students must also submit an Incomplete Request Form.
  • "X" grades are to be used if students are deferring a final exam and they have received permission/approval from both the instructor and a dean.

Thank you from INSIGHTS

On behalf of the Dean of Studies office and the INSIGHTS team, we hope this e-newsletter has been beneficial to you this academic year.

Last fall when we launched INSIGHTS, our goals were to communicate the changes and improvements that were being made to the advising and registration process, and improve the coordination and communications among faculty members and our student services-focused departments, enabling us to better work together to assist students in all areas of their Barnard experience.

We appreciate you viewing INSIGHTS each week and we're very pleased to share that our open rate ranged from 45-70 percent, a very high percentage in evaluating communications programs.

We'd love to hear your thoughts on INSIGHTS and let us know if there are other topics you'd like us to add this fall - you can email us at insights@barnard.edu. Thanks and have a great summer.
