TRIPLE TAPE LAUNCH @ UNSPECIFIED EAST PERTH BACKYARD, SATURDAY APRIL 28

The day chosen for the backyard show turned out to be the rainiest day of the year. Morning arrived humid and heavy. It sat on your shoulders like a hot wet towel. By noon, the heavens began to sprinkle and when I arrived in East Perth, the humidity had yielded to a cool refreshing dampness. Raindrops still splashed me teasingly as I carried speakers and lights through the front yard, past the geodesic igloo, round the side path and into the dewy backyard. It was a grin-inducing sight: smatterings of people all about...

Finding Comfort in Layers

I’m still surfing couches, and sleeping in spare rooms and on other people’s mattresses, and will be doing so for about one more week until I move into a delightful room in a delightful house for one month. This delightful house has a dog, a pretty backyard, and really pretty kitchen. I haven’t been able to cook proper meals for myself during this transient period I’m going through, and since absence makes the heart grow fonder, I thought I would figure out exactly what I want to cook on the first or second night I move in to the delightful house.

A Perfect Fit: A Review of Skin at The Blue Room Theatre

Humphrey Bower’s Skin gives an example of how an engaging and interesting performance done well is all you really need to keep an audience thrilled. Taking us through two tales of transformation Bower effortlessly shifts from a regional town in the northwest of WA to Vietnam. His two stories follow a Melbourne hairdresser’s holiday in South East Asia and… well himself, or at least a version of himself, and his trip to Western Australia’s North Western desert.

Perth’s ultimate music quiz night is hosted by music brain and partystarter Tomas Ford, along with his quiz-destroying sideman Byron Bard. Anyone who has been to one of these quizzes knows it’s not just about questions; there’s singing, stupid games, weird stuff (it is Tomas Ford after all) and lollies, too.

You and your pals are in for a truly smashing night, so get yourselves together and book a table as quickly as you can. First in gets the best table. Entry is ten dollars per person paid on the night. To book, drop Tomás an email at popquiz@tomasford.com and let him know which of these styles of table will best suit your team size.

Also playing for the second time at Mojo’s will be the man called Kritikal, a selector causing serious waves around town. Last, but certainly not least, the original geeza Sorted. SATURDAY may 5

DZ Deathrays

at Mojos bar, fremantle

DZ Deathrays play Mojos Bar this Saturday. This blitzkrieg two piece are nothing like the Mess Hall or The Black Keys. Rather than pooling blues rock influences, these guys have large stoner rock record collections & if you think - ‘stoner rock from a guitar & drums two piece where’s the balls without the bass’? - think again. A tidy use of the ole octave pedal on the electric guitar brings the low end in abundance when required. They’ve slammed the east coast supporting the likes of Unknown Mortal Orchestra & whilst Triple J have given them coverage, the best way to see them is live & Mojos Bar will be a highlight for this act with its raw, intimate vibe. Supports on the night are The Novocaines & FOAM. Presales are $15+bf avail thru heatseeker & moshtix. Limited tickets will be available at the door from 8pm for $20.

The Flower Drums - Outside The Province Single Launch

The Flower Drums formed in July 2011, from what was originally a bedroom recording project and the brainchild of ex-Streetlight frontman Leigh Craft. Their debut EP Shadows Aren't Real was recorded in ferntree gully and intended as a musical gift for friends, but after word spread and the radio started playing it, it inevitably took on a life of it's own.

MILK - an exhibition of creatures, skin demons and costumed musicians

at bivouac, northbridge

“Vivid, unyielding realism gracing forms that should
never be” is how US artist Haze XXL describes new
works by artist Mow Skwoz.

The exhibition, which runs until 3 June at
Bivouac on William Street, is called MILK - an
opaque white fluid secreted by female mammals for
the nourishment of their young.

Skwoz has shared her ‘creatures’ in collaborative
exhibitions at Outskirts, Out to Get Ya, and Windows

Mini Art Mart presents Carly Nasso

at ruck rover general store, mt lawley

Carly Nasso has had 20 years of exhibiting diminutive, collaged paintings and drawings of curious characters.

After living all her life in the city, Carly and her young family moved to a small Mid Western town on the edge of the wheatbelt in Western Australia. These works are directly influenced by the experience.

These new, one-off works are created with an array of materials including felt, paper, pencil, felt pen, crayon and paint.

The unusual characters are sometimes animalistic and not quite human. They exist in a world where nature and science combine with fantasy and emotion.

Carly is exhibiting at Mini Art Mart, inside Ruck Rover General Store, through May 2012.

Ruck Rover General Store, Shop 4 / 595 Beaufort St, Mt Lawley  WA  6050
