No chip chopping allowed

‘Chip chopping’ is a practice whereby a participant in a poker tournament redeems their chips for cash at the expiry of the tournament.

When the concept of chip chopping applies, the tournament will become unlawful (outside the Casino) if:

  • • the operator, or venue, takes a portion of the entry fee; or
  • • there is a dealer who is not a participant in the game; or
  • • payment is made by the player to enter the venue.

For example, OLGR is aware of a number of venues operating timed poker tournaments with an entry fee of $30 with the player receiving $27 worth of chips and the remainder going to the operator or venue to cover costs.

This type of tournament is unlawful outside of the Casino.

The Penalty

Anyone organising an unlawful game, can be fined up to $5,500 for the first offence and up to $11,000 for subsequent offences. Participants in an unlawful game can also be penalised with a $5,500 fine.

Latest list of violent venues released

Three-quarters of the state's most violent pubs and clubs have recorded reductions in violent incidents since special conditions including lockouts, bans on glass and alcohol restrictions were imposed in December 2010. Improvements were recorded with 31 out of the 42 licensed venues reducing alcohol-related incidents, 16 venues were removed from the list altogether, and for the second time there are no Level 1 venues in the Sydney CBD. Special conditions have been imposed on the list of Level 1 and 2 venues from 1 June 2011.

Responsible Gambling Awareness Week – Thank you

Broken Hill Silver City Workingmen's Club staff Gavin Hann, Tim Roney, Leigh Jarvis and Dee Pritchard promote the responsible gambling message.

Responsible Gambling Awareness Week (23-29 May 2011) raised awareness of problem gambling with many events held at venues across NSW. Initiatives included Wagga Wagga pubs and clubs displaying special bar mats; Central Coast problem gambling services holding information days and displays at Mingara Recreation Club and the Central Coast Leagues Club; and staff in Broken Hill venues wearing shirts promoting free Gambling Help services to patrons.

OLGR would like to thank all licensees who participated in the week's events. If you know a problem gambler refer them to gambling help.

Workshops coming to location near you

Our free RSA on the frontline workshops are now in full swing and coming to a location near you. The workshops offer practical strategies for staff to deal with issues of intoxication, security and violence, and minors.

OLGR is working on broadening future course options to allow licensees to select from a range of topics other than RSA that are more specific to local issues. The new course options will include topics such as club corporate governance, gaming and cash flow, best practice and drink spiking amongst others.

We want to hear from you! For expressions of interest and suggestions on new course content please contact Lucas Ho on 02 9995 0846 or lucas.ho@communities.nsw.gov.au

Appointing managers under corporate licence

A reminder to all clubs and hotels holding a corporate licence that under liquor laws, when appointing an approved manager, an ‘appointment of manager notice’ must by lodged with the Casino Liquor and Gaming Control Authority. By law this must be lodged within 28 days for hotels, and within two months for clubs.

In the case of a registered club that has two or more premises, an approved manager must be appointed at each of those premises where the club’s secretary is not present, within two months. Some exceptions apply. More>

Drink safety stewards hit Newcastle

Bright yellow drink safety stewards hit the streets of Newcastle and Hamilton in April to spread the word on responsible drinking. The campaign, an initiative of the Newcastle/Hamilton Precinct Liquor Accord, included the distribution of 20,000 drinking safety cards as well as a 4-minute routine spelling out the Six Steps to a Hassle Free Night – all choreographed to the disco track “The Bus Stop”. R U Over It?

An award winning patron education campaign in the Riverina town of Leeton, aimed at raising awareness that drivers can risk being 'over the limit' many hours after drinking alcohol, has shown some great results. The campaign including posters, leaflets, coasters, stamp and website with an easy-to-use drinks calculator was implemented by the Leeton Liquor Accord members and funded by Leeton Council and the Southern NSW Local Health Network. All resources are available now for use by any accord. More info >

Show us your brand and win!

A reminder to all local liquor accords - you now have a new logo to help promote your accord to your community. The aim of the branding is to replace multiple logos which may have been used in the past, with a single recognisable logo for each accord. The more each accord uses it, the more the accord brand will be promoted across NSW.

We would love to see how your accord is using the brand. Be one of the first 10 x people to send in an example of how your accord is using it and win a ‘Shaolin’ movie DVD starring Jackie Chan courtesy of Hopscotch Films.

Simply email us an image/sample of your accord branding in use to editor@communities.nsw.gov.au with “Accord” in the subject line. Don’t forget to include your name, address and contact details. Only winners will be contacted.
