Early Alert - Midterm Grade Contact

On March 3rd the staff of the CCPS Undergraduate Advising Center made contact with 230 CCPS students who received a university midterm grade report. These reports are made available in myBanner to every student who has earned less than 25 college credits or is on academic review. Our contact is to prompt students to review their midterm grades, provide information about our advising services and workshops, inform them of policies and deadlines, and to provide general outreach for those students who may be struggling academically at this point in the semester. We provide this information to program Unit Heads and coordinators with program specific data as well as the college aggregate data for comparison.

GVSU Police Academy Reviews

GVSU police academy

The CCPS-UAC recently completed academic record reviews for the 33 GVSU student applicants to the 2016 GVSU Police Training Academy as part of the admission review process. This review ensures that students are meeting MCOLES academic criteria for admission to the police academy.

The Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) and Grand Valley State University requires applicants to meet one of the following academic criteria in order to be eligible for consideration:

1. Possess either an Associates or a Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university.

-or-

2. Be a registered student at GVSU and be eligible for graduation upon completion of the police academy.

The CCPS-UAC prepares certification letters to be provided to the student and MCOLES regarding academic eligibility for the training program which assists academy staff with ensuring that students are fully aware of the academic criteria necessary for admission.

Spring Break 2016

For CCPS Senior Academic Advisor, Anne London and 1st year GA Megan Coburn, Spring Break 2016 was spent on a service learning trip in Southern Mississippi with 24 undergraduate students and 3 other GVSU staff chaperones. London co-teaches PA380 Service Learning with Quincy Williams (SPNHA). This class focuses on assisting communities after natural disasters as well as providing a historical context and cultural competence component. This year a group of students from that class, members of Students Leaving a Mark (SLAM) and a couple of students affiliated with the Sophomore Academy assisted three different locations while working with Hands on Mississippi (a nonprofit organization addressing critical needs in the area).

cleaning out after a fire

The first location was a retirement community that had been recently rebuilt after being destroyed in hurricane Katrina. These low/no income residents were assisted by the group who sorted food items from Feeding America and delivered them to the rooms and also held a donut and coffee social for the residents.

The second location was the historical landmark Jefferson Davis home where the group cleaned out the bayou from debris still left over from Katrina as well as a fence painting project.

The third location was assisting a resident who's home was recently destroyed by fire which was just rebuilt after her original home was destroyed by Katrina. The group assisted her with cleaning projects and property salvage.

The group also enjoyed a cultural excursion to the Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, TN on the way down south.

School of Social Work Attribute in myBanner

school of social work logo

The CCPS-UAC, the School of Social Work, and the Registrar's office has been working on creating an attribute status in myBanner for students who are seeking an undergraduate social work degree. Since this program is a secondary admit program, we needed a way to identify students who had been admitted versus those who have not. This will allow our office to do more outreach to specific populations and eliminate several manual processes that have been time intensive for our staff. The attribute can be seen on the student's myPath as well as a search field in the student success collaborative. We are very excited about these changes. They will be fully implemented within the next month and then updated every admission cycle.

SWCA = Candidacy (fully admitted)
SWPV = Provisional (admitted pending missing requirements)
SWPB = Probationary (admitted pending GPA)
SWDE = Declared (declared but not yet admitted)

Please also note, the School of Social Work has moved up their application timeline to be before the advanced registration period. The deadline for current students to apply for Fall 2016 admission was February 12th. Incoming transfer students will be notified to bring their application to their transfer orientation session with an absolute application deadline of July 15th.

Congratulations!

Kathryn Timm and Megan Coburn  have both been awarded a NACADA 2016 Graduate Student Regional Conference Scholarship to help defray costs of attending the 2016 Great Lakes Region V Conference in Toronto Ontario in April. Congratulations to both of our graduate assistants for their fantastic representation of GVSU and CCPS!!
