Stawell Mine Reopens
Minister for Resources, Tim Pallas, visited the Stawell Gold Mine on 28 August to celebrate its upcoming return to production, with 65 new jobs added since last year and a workforce set to grow further in coming months.
Arete Capital Partners, a natural resources and mining private equity group, took ownership of the mine in 2017. Operations will focus on exploration activity underground on the eastern flank of the Magdala basalt dome.

Victoria - the State of Discovery
The Victorian Government has developed the State of Discovery: Mineral Resources Strategy 2018-2023 to help grow investment and jobs in Victoria’s minerals sector.
This strategy delivers a whole-of-government approach across the mining lifecycle.
It sets a path for improving the administration and enforcement of the state's regulatory framework for managing the social, environmental and economic conditions of the mining industry.
The strategy highlights the Government’s priorities for investment in pre-competitive geoscience and the reduction of costs and red-tape for the minerals sector. It also involves leveraging Victoria’s world-leading business conditions, infrastructure, corporate connectedness, educational excellence and workforce preparedness.
The strategy outlines areas for actions under five themes:
-
Confident communities and responsible explorers
-
Advancing geoscience and encouraging mineral exploration and development
-
Victoria as a global mining hub
-
Improve regulation practice and industry compliance
-
Deliver modern, fit-for-purpose laws

These facts come directly from the Earth Resources Sector Indicators, the Victorian Government's new annual snapshot of the sector.
The initial set of indicators, presenting Victoria’s earth resources data for the 2016-17 financial year can be viewed in full here or summary here.
The report will be used to develop additional indicators to support decision making within the sector.

Stavely Ground Release tender update
The public tender of 11 new minerals exloration blocks in the southern part of the Stavely Arc closed on 15 August 2018.
The tender included the opportunity to apply for up to $500,000 in minerals exploration grant co-funding per block from the Victorian Government’s $15 million TARGET Minerals Exploration Initiative’s grants program.
Outcomes of the tender are expected to be announced later this year, subject to evaluation and government approvals.
As part of our ongoing commitment to community engagement, nine information sessions were recently held in towns throughout regional western Victoria. These information sessions were a great opportunity for local residents to learn about minerals exploration and mining, and become familiar with the ground release and tender process.
Further information on the competitive tender process and geoscience data, reports and models can be found here.
