Editor's note

It seemed ludicrous at the time – one after another, seven MPs came forward to say they had lately discovered they held dual citizenship, and so their eligibility to stand for parliament was in doubt. Two Greens senators, Scott Ludlam and Larissa Waters, resigned over the issue, while the Nationals’ Barnaby Joyce, Matt Canavan and Fiona Nash have stayed in parliament, as has One Nation’s Malcolm Roberts and NXT’s Nick Xenophon.

Starting today, the High Court will deliberate on each of those cases, and as Michelle Grattan writes, the findings could have huge implications for the Turnbull government. Most pressing is the case of Deputy Prime Minister Joyce, because a finding against him would trigger a by-election in his lower house seat. Although he is likely to win that, the distraction could be catastrophic for a government with a one-seat majority and struggling in the polls.

High stakes for Turnbull government as High Court hears MPs' citizenship cases

Michelle Grattan, University of Canberra

For Malcolm Turnbull, on a wafer-thin majority and struggling in the polls, the outcome of the seven High Court cases is of vital importance.
