Comet ‘Demolition Derby’ Creates New Information About Solar System Origin

Inline Image

Compelling new images from the Herschel Space Telescope – parked more than 1.5 million kilometres from earth and facing into deep space -- are showing researchers what the formation of our solar system must have looked like at its early stages: a violent, comet-laden disk of debris where thousands of 1 km wide chunks of ice collide and spin around a young star.

The images are made possible in part by SPIRE, technology created by University of Lethbridge physics and astronomy researchers and designed and built by an international consortium of space agencies, universities and research institutes. Get the full story, here.

U OF L HOSTS INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH MEETING OF SPIRE PARTNERS, MAY 3, 4

The U of L will host the first and only SPIRE consortium meeting to be held in Canada on May 3 and 4 in Banff.

Researchers from around the world will gather to update their colleagues on the mission, share data and discuss the outcomes of their research to date.

Dr. Steve MacLean, President of the Canadian Space Agency and former astronaut, will give the opening address. Learn more here.

Last Class Bash -- April 18

You can't say you weren't warned. Last Class Bash,  the ever-popular and annual blowout celebration of the end of classes, takes place April 18 beginning at noon in the Grove, just east of Markin Hall.

You should be able to hear it before you see it, if all goes as planned. While every effort is made to manage  the sound to keep it on campus, environmental conditions may carry it further.

Organizers hope the weather  cooperates for an outdoor event, but  in case of rain or snow, festivities move indoors to the Zoo. Additional information can be found here.

Parkinson discovers a mentor, launches a career

Thinking back, Emma Parkinson (BMus ’08), up-and-coming mezzo-soprano with Opera de Montréal, remembers growing up in a household filled with music.

“My dad (Brian Parkinson) is a drama professor at the University of Lethbridge and my mom is an elementary school teacher. My older sister and I grew up playing piano, taking dance lessons and putting on little plays for our family. I loved it, the performing, the singing, the dancing, all of it really,” recalls Parkinson.

“My parents always had music of all different genres going on in the house, but I actually hated opera when I was growing up. It was the one type of music that would make me run out of the room.”

How did Emma recover from her  fear of opera? Read more here.
