Kingswood College Where Potential Soars Kingswood College

Message from the Principal

Our kids have been asking for more engagement with other year levels and sub schools.

Tuesday was a breakthrough – we have had our whole school Welcome to Country at the start of the year. The P-12 House Athletics was genuinely interactive and the responses from the kids, from parents and from staff has been very positive.

Thank you to each and every community member – students, staff, parents and friends who contributed to the fun on the day.

Special thanks to those involved in the important changes required to create a whole school event, and the significant workload over a number of months to bring the event to fruition. Special thanks to

• Ryan Berg, Head of Sport for overseeing the task;
• Ian Leith, Junior School PE teacher for integrating the Junior School;
• Grant Exon, Collaboration Leader for supporting the development,  managing communication, and for organising the big picture;
• Heads of House for making it all happen on the day

The house costumes were amazing and added to the atmosphere, and I am sure the day will be remembered fondly by our students.

Best wishes to all families for the coming term break. Thank you for your support during what is, as always, a busy term.

Welcome to the WELS school

I am delighted to announce that Kingswood College will be hosting Leadership Programs run by the WELS school during the April school holidays.
Ben Righetti and Tim Guthrie are experienced educators who have been running successful, inspiring leadership and wellbeing programs for young people since 2013 at Canberra Grammar School, and we are pleased to be able to host their Victorian programs at Kingswood College.
The comprehensive four-day program provides girls and boys in Years 7 – 9 with the opportunity to participate in group and self-directed leadership activities.
Participants enjoy a range of experiences throughout the program.  Each day will include health, sport and fitness activities, which will be tailored to allow each person to challenge themselves to achieve their personal best.    The program will be tailored to the goals, interests and capabilities of the participants.
I highly recommend this program for our Kingswood College Middle School students and look forward to hearing stories from our students who participate.

Hairspray 2015

Rehearsals are well underway for our College Production of Hairspray. This production is especially exciting because it brings together our largest ever cast with over 100 students from Year 7 to Year 12. As the production takes shape, there is a strong sense of enthusiasm from both the cast and teachers involved. The show features a number of memorable songs that we are working hard to combine with high-energy dance numbers. We are very much looking forward to performing Hairspray to our community from 13 to 16 of May.

Traffic Management

In 2014, we announced that the College will be addressing the management of traffic in and around the campus and car parking as part of the College master plan.
We are embarking on the development of additional car parking off Piedmont Street including a designated drop-off zone and the closure of the central driveway through the campus.
Construction of the new car park will commence at the start of Term 2 and be operational early in Term 3 at which point the central driveway will be permanently closed to traffic.
I advise that you consider alternative parking arrangements in readiness for the construction, whilst being considerate of our neighbours and council parking signs.
You can view the plan for this important safety initiative on Kingsnet.

News from the Junior School

What an action packed time it is in the Junior School at the moment! A huge thank you to all who came along to our Prep – Year 12 House Athletics carnival on Tuesday 17 March. It was great to see students across the College enjoying themselves and representing their House with pride and the Kingswood spirit.

As the holidays approach I want to inform you of a few staffing announcements. Roger Dillon (Year 3) will be taking well-deserved long service leave in the first two weeks of term. James Ilia will be leading the regular program at this time. Also, Ms. Christina Davis our integration aide will be pursuing other teaching opportunities after almost two years in the Junior School at Kingswood College. I look forward to making an announcement on her replacement next week.

Years 3-6 Family Night

On Thursday 12 May we held a family fun night that focused on a speed journey through the specialist areas. The purpose of the evening was to have a shared enjoyable experience with your child whilst providing a snapshot of the specialist subjects of Physical Education Library, Music, Visual Arts, and LOTE. The format of the evening was to begin with a warm-up with Mr Leith, our PE teacher. Then families commenced their specialist journey at different locations depending upon their journey card. Madame Ranson had a French activity focussing on the use of ICT in LOTE, Ms Radcliffe ran a music class which involved dancing, Mrs Dell’Oro looked at a range of literary genre in the library and I held a collaborative art activity in the art room based around a featured artist – Jacob Hashimoto, who makes amazing sculptures using kite making techniques. At the end of the evening families returned to the learning lounge where Cathy McLean walked them through an example of a mindfulness activity that we run with our students in their Buddies session to assist with their focus and wellbeing.

The Big Day

I was so happy that everyone in Kingswood College gathered at the Bill Sewart Athletics Track just to celebrate my birthday!

Preps to Year 12’s were at the track on Tuesday 17 March for our House Athletics Carnival. There was discus, javelin, hurdles, running and many more events. Some people, including me, got into the shuttle run and Gwynton won that race. I tried my hardest in everything! Overall it was an awesome day and birthday. I cannot wait until next time.

School Sport Victoria Elite Sports Trials

Congratulations to Marcus Nield from Year 5 who won 5/5 matches at the recent Blackburn District trials for tennis. Marcus will now go on to represent the Blackburn District at the next stage in his quest to represent Victoria at the School Sport Australia Championships later in the year. Also, Dex Kelly and Rick Brownfield participated in Cricket trials for our District this week and acquitted themselves very well. We will wait to see if they have made it through to the next round. All students should be congratulated on making it this far as each of them is still in Year 5 and have another opportunity next year. We look forward to making further announcements in relation to some Kingswood students in hockey in coming newsletters.

Kingswood Junior School Grand Prix

Last week, Year 5 hosted the Junior School Remote Control Grand Prix on the Junior School Basketball court. There were amazing cars and everybody, spectators and competitors, enjoyed themselves.

The organising committee was made up of seven students from Year 5. We were proud to have made such an event possible and we had excellent feedback from our teachers. It was a superb event with the course, commentators and supportive crowd making this event more like the real thing. The event wouldn't have been possible without the excellent turn out we had by competitors from Years 1 - 6. Congratulations to the overall winner, Thomas Bassett from Year 4.

An entrance fee was charged and this will go towards the Royal Children’s Hospital Appeal.

We hope that everybody enjoyed themselves and hope we can organise this spectacular event next year.
