Day 2 - Wednesday March 18

Kocher Can't Be Beat in $10,000 Welcome Stake

The odds were stacked in Andrew Kocher’s favor during today’s $10,000 Pin Oak Welcome Stake. He had six of the 19 entries in the field and took the lead midway through the class aboard Cantori. He then returned four horses later to better that time aboard Heliante.

But the win wasn’t assured, as Matt Cyphert galloped in next with Lochinvar and took over the top spot.

Kocher had just one ride remaining—Carolina Suarez’ Ufarno—and he made the most of it.

“Well, I thought to beat Matt I would have one or two down, or I was going to win, so I took a little chance and turned him loose,” said Kocher.

His time of 33.78 edged Cyphert by .08 seconds.

“[In comparison to] Matt’s ride, I was a little quicker from [fence] 1 to 3 and 5AB to 6,” he said. “I was actually a little slower going to fence 2, but I sneaked one home.”

Ufarno, 13, a warmblood gelding, has earned ribbons throughout the winter, with several wins in Texas and Mississippi.

“I bought him last summer, and then a little girl bought him and owns him now, and I ride for them,” said Kocher. “He won a Welcome Stake in Gulfport and got some good ribbons at the Great Southwest Winter Series here in Katy. He’s been kind of in a little groove. Last week he had one down and was eighth in the Grand Prix of Gulfport.”

Kocher, of Lake St. Louis, Missouri, also placed third with Heliante and fourth with Cantori, for a nice piece of the $10,000 purse.

“It’s my first time at Pin Oak Charity, and I love it,” he said. “I’ve been to Katy before, but this is a whole different experience. They didn’t have this all set up. It’s beautiful. There’s tons of prize money, and we’re having fun!”

My Boy Malloy Takes The Take 2 Tricolor

After the two over fences classes were pinned, championship honors in the Take 2 Thoroughbred Hunter section came down to the under saddle class.

Dev Branham and Stephanie Cook each placed first and second aboard their respective mounts, and they entered the ring for the third and final under saddle tied in points. When the class was pinned, Branham and My Boy Malloy claimed the blue and the championship, with Cook and Texas Checkmate taking the reserve championship.

"Winning the championship is fantastic," said Branham. "I have to give credit to my friend Stephanie. We’ve had such fun competition this year. We try to go in and make each other better. We have kind of a bond over our Thoroughbreds.

"This year I knew she was going to bring her A game to Pin Oak, and I knew I had to bring it, too," he added. "In that flat class we were joking with each other. You know Malloy isn't always the best mover, but today he was like, 'I want it!' I could feel that front end stretching a little more and that canter was quieter. It feels awesome to get a nice victory, especially on Day No. 1."

Owner Diane Wilson purchased My Boy Malloy, an unraced Kentucky-bred Thoroughbred gelding, after he'd had a foxhunting career in Virginia.

"When he came, we had some things to work on," said Branham. "There was a lot of go, and we had to have a pretty big bit. We’ve been putting the time in and doing some shows, and last fall he clicked and understood the new job. His owner is awesome. She’s put the time and resources into him to bring him along, and she’s a great rider herself, so I can give her homework because he’s not stabled with me."

Branham, of Devereaux Sporthorses in Tomball, Texas, said their goal this year with Malloy is to compete in the USHJA Pre-Green Incentive Championship in Kentucky in August.

"I'm just excited there are Thoroughbreds to show against," he said. "It’s been so much fun. Especially at a show like this, when there are 30 to 60 in the Pre-Greens, it’s improbable and unrealistic to go in expecting a win or even a ribbon even if you lay down a great round. The competition is that strong. But having something we can put our Thoroughbreds in and compete against other Thoroughbreds is kind of cool. I’m very thankful to have this."

Stay Tuned for Tomorrow's Coverage

Look for coverage of the Hunter Breeding, Pre-Green Hunters and the $25,000 Pin Oak Charity Grand Prix. Competition also begins in the featured All-Breed Working Equitation, presented by Haras Dos Cavaleiros, and the American Saddlebreds will compete in their UPHA Classics.

WEEK I TITLE SPONSORS

We are thankful to our returning Week I Title Sponsors.  For two years in a row, Haras Dos Cavaleiros and Carnan Properites, have come together in support of Pin Oak.
