Research Update

Good afternoon,

Linked below is the Beer Institute’s September 2017 Import-Export Report, which is based on information reported by the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Below are some of the report's highlights:

Imports

  • Imported beer volume declined by 7.3% during September 2017 compared to September 2016, following growth of more than 19% in August.
  • Each of the four largest source countries for beer imports (Mexico, Netherlands, Belgium, and Canada) declined.
  • Distributor inventories were relatively high heading into September.
  • The timing of this year’s general price increase also impacted volume trends.
  • According to news reports, severe flooding in late September along highways in North-Eastern Mexico prevented access to the border crossing in Laredo, Texas. The decline in imports through Laredo accounted for more than 100% of the change in total beer imports to the United States.
  • Cider imports declined by 40% during September, while NA import volume grew by 24%.

Exports

  • Beer exports grew by 5.3% in September and are now up more than 19% year-to-date.
  • Cider exports grew by 1.9% in September and are now flat year-to-date.
  • NA beer exports continued their dramatic increase, continuing to grow at triple digits.
