Autumn/Winter  2016.........

As the days grow shorter, the skies at sunset glow with the most spectacular hues, blooming with pinks, reds and oranges. Have you ever wondered why autumn and winter sunsets are more vivid than any other time of the year?

During sunrise and sunset, light from the sun must pass through much more of our atmosphere before reaching our eyes, so it comes into contact with even more molecules in the air. Much of the blue light gets scattered away, making the reds and oranges more pronounced.

During this time of year, weather patterns allow for dry, clean air to sweep across the country, and more colors of the spectrum make it through to our eyes without getting scattered by particles in the air, producing brilliant sunsets and sunrises that can look red, orange, yellow or even pink.

We love this time of year! Here are our favourites…. (no filers needed)

Out and About.....

Waterfalls and Bushwalking

Hopetoun Falls and Californian Redwoods

The change in the weather delivers very welcome rain to our area and also brings out the very best in the beautiful Otway Ranges. Not only does the rain make our waterfalls more spectacular, but it brings out the most delicious aromas from the natural bush.

Located on the Aire Valley Road just past Beech Forest, Hopetoun Falls is one of the Otways must see waterfalls. A viewing platform allows you to view the falls from the carpark area. A short walk down the gully and along the boardwalk takes you to the base of the falls. After the falls if you continue to drive down the Aire Valley Road, you will come to a selection of magnificent Californian Redwoods. Just over 70 yrs old, these trees need to be seen to be believed.

What is open in winter? .........

Autumn and Winter are tricky times of year here in the Otways and on the Surf Coast. Many of the businesses do close down for the season and some do not reopen until the Queens Birthday Long Weekend.  This time of year is such a gorgeous time of year where you can nab a great deal on accommodation, however if you wanted to go out for breakfast, lunch or dinner, where could you go?

Below are a few of our favourite local places that will be open for the rest of Autumn and all of Winter.
