Editor's note

Things in Venezuela just keep getting worse. Fatalities are mounting as millions of protesters take to the streets almost daily to demand the ouster of their increasingly authoritarian president, Nicolás Maduro. In response, the president has unleashed a bloody retaliation and is making a new power grab.

But how long this can last is up to the military at this point, writes Benigno Alarcón. Maduro’s regime depends heavily on the armed forces’ willingness to repress the Venezuelan people. And if his generals stop obeying orders, it’s game over for Maduro.
