Try for 5 this National Nutrition Week

Try for 5 is coming! Held during National Nutrition Week (10 - 17 October 2021), Try for 5 is a unique collaboration between Nutrition Australia, vegetable growers and health-focused organisations to help Australians get more vegetables in their day.

Only 7.5% of Australian adults eat enough veggies. For children it is even less. In fact, Australians eat 13kg less veggies than we did 20 years ago. We all know we should eat more. Increasing the amount of vegetables we eat is everyone’s job, not just so we can feel and live well right now, but so we can look after the generations to come after us.

Queensland Mental Health Week

Queensland Mental Health Week (QMHW) is on from 9 - 17 October this year and is an annual awareness week from that aims to shine a spotlight on individual and community mental health and wellbeing.

QMHW encourages all of us to think about our mental health and wellbeing, regardless of whether we may have a lived experience of mental illness or not, and encourages help seeking behaviours, when needed. The week also gives us the opportunity to understand the importance of mental health in our everyday lives. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices.

Recipe Idea

Cheese and Spinach Gozleme

Ingredients
1 cup self raising flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 cup Greek yoghurt
Grated cheese
Spinach leaves
Lemon wedges, to serve

 

Method

1. Sift the self raising flour and baking powder into a bowl. Add the Greek yoghurt and mix well to combine. Knead the dough inside the bowl until smooth.
2. Divide the dough into four portions and roll into balls. Using a rolling pin, roll out each ball on a lightly floured surface until thin and round in shape.
3. Place the grated cheese and spinach leaves on half of the dough, leaving a 1cm border around the edge. Fold over the other half to enclose and seal the edges.
4. Heat a large frypan over a medium heat. Cook the gozleme, one at a time, until lightly golden on both sides.
5. Serve with lemon wedges.

Makes 4.

Protein

Protein is a nutrient that our body needs to grow and repair cells. It can also be an energy source, especially if you are not eating enough carbohydrates. Your body needs enough of the right types of protein every day, and you may need more protein than usual during growth spurts for children and teenagers, pregnancy and breastfeeding, or after an illness.

Most Australians eat far more protein than they need, but some people may not be getting enough. And if you are vegetarian or vegan, there is a higher chance that this might be you. Meat and dairy products are commonly associated with being packed full of protein, but there are many plant-based foods that are a great source of protein too.

  • Lean meats – beef, lamb, veal, pork, kangaroo
  • Poultry – chicken, turkey and duck
  • Fish and seafood – fish, prawns, crab, lobster, mussels, oysters, scallops
  • Eggs
  • Dairy products – milk, yoghurt, cheese
  • Nuts and seeds – almonds, pine nuts, walnuts, macadamias, hazelnuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds
  • Legumes and beans – all beans, lentils, chickpeas, split peas, tofu
