Being thankful this Christmas

It’s hard to miss. The Christmas season has officially started. Shops are adorned with decorations, Christmas trees and twinkling lights are springing up all over the place and we’ve already run out of any free time in December!

There is so much going on during Advent, whether it be school trips, plays, dinners or Christmas do’s – and it is all exciting and wonderful.

Church is no different, with lots of activities to celebrate such a special festival. Many parents will take the opportunity to think about Jesus as a family, or to go through the story of the birth of Jesus. But often it can be tricky to be consistent and squeeze all these things in.

Could you encourage the parents in your congregations this year and help them to think about how they can share the joy of Christmas in their homes?

“Who can add to Christmas? The perfect motive is that God so loved the world. The perfect gift is that He gave His only Son. The only requirement is to believe in Him. The reward of faith is that you shall have everlasting life."

- Corrie Ten Boom

What an incredible gift. So we thought perhaps before all the events really kick off that we could take some time to be thankful now. To focus our hearts on what Jesus has done for us, for the blessings that he has given us.

Perhaps you could suggest ways that families can show gratitude to God for the love he has shown us by sharing that love with others – whether that is donating to a local food bank or inviting someone around for dinner in December.

And we will be praying that you and your church enjoy a great Christmas season remembering the perfect gift of Jesus.

Christmas activity resources for the church

There are so many great resources out there to inspire our Christmas activities for families in the church.

This one by Scripture Union is full of creative ideas for celebrating Christmas in an all-age context. It includes craft ideas, dramas, monologues, reflections, games, teaching outlines and more.

The Mystery of the New Noisy Neighbour!

Bible Society have created a new Christmas story video titled 'The Mystery of the New Noisy Neighbour' which places a mouse detective at the heart of the nativity story.

We join him on his journey to discover that his new noisy neighbour is in fact Jesus - Emmanuel, Rescuer and King!

They also have an interactive, easy to use nativity script to go alongside the video! Check out their resources here

30 Ways to Celebrate Jesus at Christmas

Victoria Beech at GodVenture has some really great craft activity ideas surrounding the Christmas themes. We particularly like the gingerbread nativity scene! Take a look here and follow GodVenture's advent activities online @Godventure

Please send us your stories of inspiring faith at home – good and bad – we know it’s a rollercoaster! We’d love to include them in our emails and on the blog.
