House advances Native energy bill

WASHINGTON—The House today passed the Native American Energy Act, HR 538, by a vote of 254-173. The bill, introduced by Rep. Don Young (R-Alaska), streamlines the federal appraisal and mineral leasing requirements.

In particular, Section 8 of the bill authorizes the Navajo Nation to negotiate and enter mineral leases without the time and cost for review and approval by the Interior secretary.

Navajo Nation representatives Ann Kirkpatrick, (D-Ariz.), and Jason Chaffetz, (R-Utah), voted for the bill, while Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.), and Michelle Grisham-Lujan, (D-N.M.,) voted against the bill.
