The League of Kind + Kindred

Here we go! Today I'm kicking off the letter writing series for The League of Kind + Kindred—that's us (and LKnK for short)! It's the first day of spring, so why not start now?!

These will be sent out every week or so. I'm starting to use the hashtag #LKnK on Twitter (and possibly Instagram) more often and believe it is a great way for all of us to have a global conversation, meet one another, and connect with other designers.

Also, if you've been following along with Below the Fold, I've got an important message I'm sharing in a mini-episode this afternoon.

Dear Krystle,

Back when I was 24, I took a part-time gig at a small agency to ease my transition into full time self-employment. The plan was to work there for six months to a year until my little web design business felt more established.

One month in, it wasn’t going so hot.

I called a meeting with the bosses to see how we might work together to make it work. (Does this sound like I was wearing Big Girl pants? Ha! Only after being forced to suck-it-up by a good friend who knew I was a bit wet behind the ears and ready to call it quits.)

As soon as I walked in the building that morning, I knew I was fired. Intuition, my friends, told me something was about to go down. There were no outward signs—I just had a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach. Fast forward two hours (which were absolutely torturous) and I walked into the bosses’ office and, you guessed it, got s-canned. After handing in my key and walking outside, I started to cry. Hey, at least I kept it together and held my ground back when it was two verses one!

That was the moment I swore I would never work for anyone else ever again. Though not the happiest, it was certainly one of the greatest moments of my creative life.

What's is the biggest shift or most powerful moment you've experienced in your creative life thus far?

Warmly,
Erin

RECENTLY...

Doing: Renaming my business. I decided the adoption of "pixology" from my last business where it made sense (web design) no longer has meaning. So, I'm changing it. I just came up with a new name! Will share more soon...

Reading: Daring Greatly by Brené Brown — why have I waited so long to read this incredible book?!

Listening to: Professor Blastoff (by Tig Notaro who is hi-larious)

Watching: Any and all Brittish detective series.

Needing: to dedicate some time on weekends for painting. I did a painting class this month and it was so fun! Now to finish what I started...

Wanting: Some serious downtime...on a beach, perhaps.
