CPC Statement on U.S. Supreme Court’s Eviction Moratorium Decision New York, NY – On Thursday, August 12th, the U.S. Supreme Court made a 6-3 decision to block part of New York State’s eviction moratorium. The Chinese-American Planning Council (CPC) is deeply disappointed in this decision as it strips tenants of their protections in the middle of a health crisis. Under this decision, tenants can no longer avoid eviction by submitting a hardship declaration. “The U.S. Supreme Court’s decision is not only disappointing but also dangerous. 60% of Asian American New Yorkers are struggling with rent, and this decision will risk the health of many New Yorkers, especially with the Delta variant on the rise. No one should be housing insecure, especially during a pandemic. Relief for tenants such as extending the eviction moratorium should be our number one priority right now” said Wayne Ho, President & CEO of the Chinese-American Planning Council. At a time when the end of the eviction moratorium is fast approaching, this decision disproportionately harms Asian Americans, communities of color, immigrants and low-income New Yorkers. Over the past few months, we have witnessed the confusion and frustrations over the Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP) from its delay in payments to its lengthy application process. CPC has been working with community members to apply for ERAP because it has been a challenging process for many. We need to ensure that ERAP as a program is streamlined and responsive to all New Yorkers. Residents must receive their relief immediately, which will also ensure that small landlords get rental payments. Lastly, we urge our State legislators to return to session to extend the eviction moratorium to June 2022. CPC is a member of the Housing Justice for All Coalition. Please refer to their website for actions you can take next week and beyond to extend the eviction moratorium and ensure ERAP reaches all New Yorkers who need it. ABOUT CPC 關於華策會 |
