A $4.9 million grant to Brown's Center for the Study of Slavery and Justice will fund a partnership with Williams College and the Mystic Seaport Museum to use maritime history to study historical injustices and generate new insights on the relationship between European colonization in North America, dispossession of Native American land and racial slavery in New England. Major revisions to NASA’s rules governing Grants & Cooperative Agreements
Join us at March's Brown Bag to learn of recent changes to grant policy announced by NASA. This includes updated provisions requiring prior approval. Categories impacted by the change include Equipment, Participant Support, Cost Sharing.

Unfortunately, Coeus will not accept documents over a certain size. If your Narrative or other document will not upload, we strongly suggest printing it to PDF to shrink its size. If this is still too big, you may need to do this twice. 

Annual COI Reporting for Calendar Year 2020
Brown’s Annual Conflict of Interest cycle for faculty, instructors, postdocs, and researchers is underway and runs through March 10. Brown’s Conflict of Interest (COI) in Research Policy includes details regarding who is required to submit an Annual COI Reporting form.

Removing access for those who transferred or left Brown
Did a team member recently leave or transfer out of your department? If so, a CIS IT Service Center ticket needs to be submitted by their former department administrator or supervisor. To remove access, read here.

Required Outside Activities Approvals
Faculty are responsible for reading and adhering to the Policy on Outside Professional Activities for Faculty, including seeking Dean's approval for certain Outside Professional Activities. 

International Research and Activities Guidance
All researchers are encouraged to carefully review the OVPR’s International Research and Activities website and ask questions prior to submitting sponsored research proposals and engaging in international research. 

Non-U.S. Support Question for COI Annual Reporting
With the launch of the COI annual reporting period, we ask that faculty review the FAQs for the Non-US Support question and reach out with any questions to COI@Brown.edu. 

Gift and Ghost Authorship Prohibition
Did you know gift and ghost authorship are prohibited under Brown’s Guidance on Authorship in Scholarly and Scientific Publications? Consider whether colleagues who contributed in some way may instead warrant an acknowledgement. 

IACUC Policies Updated and Approved
The following policies have been recently updated and approved: PI Eligibility and Requirements, Avian Embryo Use, Euthanasia of Rodents, Blood Collection Techniques in Lab Animals and an SOP on Semiannual Inspections. 

The IACUC welcomes Dr. Susanna Kurnick as the newest member of CARE
Dr. Kurnick will be serving as the Assistant Director for Veterinary Services in the Center for Animal Resources and Education (CARE).  She is joining us from Boston University where she was the Research Clinical Veterinarian/Acting Director of the National Emerging Infectious Disease laboratories.  

IRB Tip: CITI Education
Did you know that incomplete human subjects research courses only stay active in CITI for 12 months? If you do not complete a course within that time, it is deactivated and you will need to re-register for it.

HRPP/IRB monthly virtual Q&A Sessions
HRPP/IRB is holding monthly virtual open hours to answer your individual questions regarding human research protections, IRB submissions, and policies and procedures. RSVPs will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. 

Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) Training for NSF awards
PIs on active NSF awards should ensure students and trainees conducting research on awards completed or will complete the required RCR training. Due to the remote learning environment, training can be completed online via CITI.

Brown Technology Innovations Active at JPM Annual Health Conference
For the 39th Annual J.P. Morgan Health Care Conference, held virtually on January 11-14, Brown Technology Innovations highlighted 20 faculty members with transformative innovations and intellectual property in the health space. 

Showcase: Life Sciences Research to Elm Street Ventures
Tech Innovations hosted Elm Street Ventures (ESV) in January to showcase five life science research with potential for commercial applications. The ESV principals provided useful feedback to new ideas emerging from faculty inventors. 

Brown Technology Innovations Connects Inventors with Entrepreneurs
Tech Innovations has accelerated its work to connect Brown inventors with experienced entrepreneurs who can guide approaches to commercial applications of research. First up: Barry Lester and his innovative way to interpret infant cries.

Save the Date: 2021 NSF ENG CAREER Workshop
This Workshop will be held virtually April 21-23, 2021 and will help prepare junior faculty who plan to submit a CAREER Award proposal to NSF’s Directorate for Engineering (ENG). Applications are due February 18.
